Should I get a smart meter?

Yep. And I pull out the plugs at night, other than the fridge plug.
I couldn't do that, I've just composed a list of devices in our house that are left permanently plugged in, I had to write it down and do it room by room and it came to a grand total of 45 devices, mostly electronic that use very little and mostly not doing anything other than being on standby but I didn't imagine that there were that many. Plus there are also 7 devices that are hardwired in without plugs.
We do run the washing machine and dishwasher overnight, the dishwasher has an ECO cycle that reduces both water and energy usage but it takes 3.5hours so since the dishwasher has a built-in timer I set it to come on at 2am so it can be emptied in the morning. The washing machine has a built timer so that comes on at 6am so it's finishing as we get up.

Frau Bahn's mum unplugs everything at night, there was an LFB advert in the 70s that advised folk to do so and she's still in the 70s. What she gets up to in her own house is her business but when she stays at ours and I can't log in to my work of a morning cos someone's unplugged the fucking router, and the clocks on the oven, microwave etc. need resetting, I get the hump...

Anyway, we have a smart meter, had to so we can take advantage of cheaper leccy for the car during the night. More often than not the thing is unplugged as it lives in a place where the hoover and steam-mop gets plugged in a lot.

What changed for you that couldn't be done without a smart meter?

Just seeing how much I was blowing having so many things turned on I guess. My flatmate's even more anal about it than me. He monitors it like a hawk. It does help you notice.

An ordinary meter tells you how much electricity you are using. The wheel on the meter goes round and round at a greater rate.

Did you really have no idea that using many devices at once burns more electricity?
Electrical devices have a little plate on them which states their power, in terms of watts.

The "units" in which electricity is charged are kilowatt hours. A hundred watt device run for an hour will use one tenth of a unit.

It's a bit handier. I dont need to do the calculation. It says £1.84 or whatever. Just a bit more convenient than watching a 1980s wheel ticking along and trying to figure out how much I'm paying.

Does it give you cumulative cost up that day in the billing period?

Well yeh, it flips over at 12am. But yeh, you can see the pence add up in real time. It gives a little yellow light when you near £2 or whatever you set so you know. Just helps with budgeting for idiots like me.

I see.

Anyone know if my electric meters are actually likely to fully stop working when the long wave radio signal gets switched off next year, or are OVO just being dramatic because they want to replace them? I'm not on different peak/off-peak rates.

That depends if its an RTS/DTS meter you have, this may help you identify: If you have a radio teleswitch or dynamically teleswitched energy meter

It could well be your supplier has on record from its serial number that your meter is indeed an RTS/DTS one and which will be affected, but it could also be likely that your supplier is pushing on yet another angle as they have been doing to desperately meet the government smart meter changover programme.

They claim at least one (they haven't said which) is an RTS meter. I understand about it needing to know the time for peak/off-peak rates but I don't get those. The email I got is full of other vague and dire predictions like it * might * also stop my heating and/or hot water and/or all electric from working at all.

I'm getting a SMART gas meter as my boiler installer says my old meter is a bit rubbish.
Not sure about the electric meter - I'll see how I feel after the house wiring is finished...

Do you have electric storage heaters or hot water on a timer?

I thought the gas meter talked to the electric meter to be smart as it's the electric meter that sends the readings to the supplier. :hmm:

"Storage heaters" that actually function like regular radiators and are on a different electric meter to most other stuff. Hot water comes from a tank with no controls I can see besides the main off switch on the wall. Both my electric meters are on the same rate but even if they were each on different rates, I'd be paying that no matter what time it is.

Oh well if that's the case perhaps the decision has been taken from me... I can't think of any reason to object to having both...
I just hated the patronising marketing and the notion that micromanaging my energy supply - perhaps even via my phone would be of any use or even interest to me..

EDIT of course you're correct. It needs power ffs.... I just realised that or various reasons I'll need to delay this until my electrics are signed off...

EDIT apparently they have a 10 year lithium battery and a normally off display.

Right well I’m finally considering it ( shakes fist at moon  ). It only makes sense however if I can be notified of an hour/day of insanely cheap electricity so I can switch on:

  • immersion
  • heat pump and dehumidifiers, possibly fan heater(s)
  • cooking equipment

I still think it’s unlikely because I still don’t have mobile reception in the house but have seen someone say this isn’t needed.

We shall see.
