Self-indulgent pet thread

I can confirm this!
Chilly spends most of the working day dropping/throwing things around my office and pooping on anything which stops moving for 5 seconds. Wants to be into everything, will bite you if you try to prevent that. Also has no sense of fear.

You might be able to train him to fly to the top of his cage or a perch over a tray/newspaper when he wants to have a shit - might be a nice project to try, they do like the close interaction and mental stimulation involved in the process of (by positive reinforcement) teaching them something :)

If you want any advice about parrot-keeping, I'd be more than happy to answer any questions.
I'm saying this bit publicly because some people tend to get upset at the idea of keeping birds, but they do need to spend most of the day (they sleep when it's dark - well at least the species we tend to keep as pets!) out of a cage and free to (with supervision) fly/climb around in your home and destroy all your stuff/clank your crockery because they like the noise it makes :D They're very high-maintenance

I think my main issue would be making sure it (or any parrot) got along with Kail alright. Kail is friendly and inquisitive but I fear he would stress an emotionally complex creature like a parrot.

You know Kail best, but I reckon parrots tend to get on/coexist with some types of dogs better than others - not relevant to you but on a related note having had cats and birds at the same time I can safely say that is difficult, there is no way that any cat isn't seeing a small/medium parrot as potential lunch, both cat and parrot know this, also bacteria that live in cat saliva and thus, due to constant grooming, their fur is something that birds don't tend to have any immunity to.

I think dogs and parrots might be easier and some breeds of dog would be more problematic than others - those with a high chase drive or highly energetic and might get excited by a flappy companion in their home - so probably sighthounds and terriers not a great mix with parrots. Not a dog expert but I think bully breeds like Kail are not that excitable or prone to trying to chase or hunt things? So that could work if Kail heeds you and you can teach him to not bother the bird.

The one thing I would say though is that parrots tend to be utterly terrified on an instinctive rooted in the amygdala part of the brain fear for their life type level of snakes (mostly due to potential nest-raiding behaviour to eat eggs and chicks, a lot of birds are especially afraid of snakes and large rodents due to their nests and chicks being a good food source for some species of those) - so if you have or intend to have snakes, they would probably have to be kept out of sight of any parrot, for the parrot's peace of mind.

I hadn't even considered snakes and parrots. There's gonna be 2 snakes in the room where the parrot would be so i think that rather nouses that idea. Still, i'd rather know than stress the parrot like.

He's gorgeous!
And yes that reminds me of something that someone else said to me once about a pet gecko, I can't remember the exact words but it was along the lines of "there's absolutely nothing going on in there behind his lovely eyes, oh to be like him" :D

She's not well enough to come home yet but there's a Yellow Rat Snake at a reptile rescue charity that's got my name on it. She's going to be near impossible to rehome to most people because, and i quote the rescue, "she's 5 and a bit ft of pure evil."

She's relatively elderly at 15+ years old so I'm her retirement home. I like that.

I have thr baby bristlenose plec fish growing on in a small fish tank so they don't end up a snack for the others in the big community tank. I'm thinking that when they've grown enough to be moved on and the tank becomes empty that I'll use it for shrimp. Plant it heavy, it'll look the mutts.

Speaking of fish, as soon as i upgrade the community tank, I getting a shoal of these. How cool are they? 😍Gnathonemus_petersii_Sunshine_Acuario.jpg
