Self-indulgent pet thread

Far too many. My other half gets involved with these facebook groups about rescuing them and I keep getting phone calls saying, "there's a ferret needs rescuing in Cornwall, they're threatening to put him down, oh also he has a mate, can we go to Cornwall at the weekend?" The answer is 20 at the minute, or 19 and one polecat.

But, yes they do make great pets. They are a little bit smelly (very smelly if not neutered). But they are easy to look after, they sleep most of the day and they play when they're up and snuggle on your lap.

20??:D They sound lovely but they do seem to be abandoned often (as in, I hear of them being abandoned and don't hear of them in any other context really). I wonder if that's the smell. (((Ferrets)))

It's to do with the usual reasons. People find that they don't have the time or inclination to keep a pet. Also working ferrets get abandoned when their usefulness has expired and breeders often breed too many of them. Then there is the fact that ferrets often escape and get lost. The pity is that they are domesticated animals and don't survive long in the wild.

Not really. If they're used to being handled they won't bite. Occasionally you get one that likes to chew on you or nip you (I think they think it's funny). I've only ever had one proper biter (out of about 40 that have come and gone) and I pretty much cured him in a week by taking him for long walks. Harnessing him was fun, though.

Not as bad as it looks - more of a boop than a biff :)
