Self-indulgent pet thread

yup. we were IMing about how to teach my cat to use a covered litter tray. Which bless him, he just can't get the hang of...
Ours has got the hang of litter trays but thinks it can "dig" it's poo into the grass  It's like having a dog only because it "hides" its doings harder to spot where it is until you accidentally step in it. Grrr.

ours does litter trays- he's super-fastidious, won't go in the garden, he has 2 trays and he wees in one and poos in the other. If he's pooed twice- once at each end- and we haven't cleaned it yet, he gets quite distressed and stands and meows at it  But we want him to use covered trays now there is a kid on the way- we just don't want a crawler being able to get at cat litter! But he just doesn't seem to get the covered one- we got one which has a kind of cat flap at the front, and one where he climbs in the top. He explores them, but doesn't use them

yep I got a covered cat lit tray.. didn't want it stinking out the kitchen...he has taken to it, but also now confuses his cat travel box with the cat lit tray.. they do look so similar tho!

Has your cat got access to the garden?
I'm in the process of getting my kitten to use the garden, rather than the tray inside. I put a thick layer of litter in the flower bed and then I added a small amount of used litter from his tray (so that he associates that area with his smell/ waste), he's been weeing in that spot for the last few days, I also turned the soil so that it was soft and add fresh litter every few days (I'll reduce the amount of litter once he's got the hang of things) ....not sure about poos yet.... think I'll tackle that next week!

Just thought I'd mention this as I'm sure if your cat has got access to the garden it'll be so much easier for you with the new baby etc, for him to be using it.

He's a posh, inbred, ridiculous cat: he only has access to the outside when we are supervising him. He can't be trusted with the neighbour's pond, the other neighbour's dog, cars, etc....!

I have three posh, inbred, ridiculous cats...!
Diff breed to you, but I know just how difficult it can be to train a fussy cat. We keep one in at night as he's still young, so he still has a litterbox, but during the day he has supervised access outside and as he is now weeing outside, it has really cut down on how often I'm having to change the litterbox. It may be worth having a go, even just to give him the option of using the garden if he (finally) wanted to....

what breed are yours?

Cross eyed, evil looking siamese...! ;-)

Three of them: 1 attention seeking pain in the ass, 1 skittish people-hater and (thankfully) 1 fairly normal one....then again he's only 6 months old so that's bound to change!
We are Siam-e-ese if you please. We are Siam-e-ese if you don't please...

Scarred me for life. That and having 2 Siamese cats when growing up who were determined to get rid of us pesky children :D

Good thinking. My boy Stanley didn't like his hooded tray so I took the door off for him and he's fine with it now
I'm still trying to achieve a "litterbox solution" for Breeze. At the moment it's a low tray for number 1s and a deep plastic box for number 2s, so not happy about that. Got a larger sort of "high and low" one coming in the post, so wish us luck.

Meanwhile, I got a cat-jacket for her - idea being eventually to get her onto a lead so she can go out for a walk. She was surprisingly meh about wearing it. Will stick the lead on tomorrow to see how she gets on dragging it around for a bit.

Impersonating a dachsund here:

cats are a bit odd in their toilet behaviour arent they?

my two are fine with their enclosed, flapped litter box but they always poo at one end and wee at the other? whats this high/low thing?

also i was surprised by one of them pissing/spraying a vertical wall - didnt think lady cats could do that?! maybe she does her PV exercises? :D

My two are the new comers :D tiny poo (which is what Isis's name has mutated into :D) is often yowling at a tabby cat in the garden, it was her that did the spraying.

I help her claim her territory with the plant sprayer (at the tabby cat, not marking walls :D)

If you have a garden it might be worth tipping some of their used cat-litter out there to discourage the neighbour tabby from claiming it. Oh, and to get rid of the cat-spray from the wall use biological laundry detergent dissolved in warm water or she'll go back there again and again
