Salford Unemployed and Community Resource Centre is threatened with closure

They have lost their Lottery funding after being erroneously accused of being overtly political. They are reapplying but are going to be without any funding for over a year, and desperately need to raise money in order to survive.

More details in this Salford Star article, thread inspired by reading about the demise of the Newcastle UWC in this forum. My local Unite Community branch is trying to do as much as they can to ensure that the Salford Unemployed and Community Resource Centre has a future.

Good luck to them. Hopefully they'll find a way through this.

It does raise a question in the longer term about places like this.

My own view is that they should find ways of being self-sustainable and not rely on grants and the like.

Many, many years ago I was involved in a UWC that struggled to get off the ground because of limitations caused reliance on TU backers. Fairly soon most of us "activists" left after being increasingly hamstrung by the wannabe bureaucrats holding the purse strings.

No easy answers, but food for thought that's all.
