Rosetta space mission - Philae probe due to land on comet on 12th Nov 2014

Lander control centre report Philae landed with less of a bounce than expected. Surface might be softer than expected.

Gas thruster didn't fire so was faulty (not a sensor error).

Concern about the harpoons which don't appear to have secured the lander. They may need to try to fire them again to ensure the lander is fixed there.

It may be that the lander is simply 'sitting' in (adhesive) contact with the surface but not secured - I think the engineer talked about measuring some subsequent motion in the lander.

Still, provided they can get the initial science sequence completed...

So if it isn't anchored, and they can't get it anchored, what does that mean? Is the gravity on there enough to keep it stable, or will it go careening off as soon as it starts to move its sciencey-gathering instruments and stuff?

Apparently it sank 4 cm in to the surface. This may be sufficient to hold it in place for a time adhesively. Looks like they need to try to trigger the harpoons again (perhaps the landing was too soft to fire them, who knows right now). That'll take at least another hour to complete and confirm, if not longer. No news on the screws yet.

Chat in the operations control centre seems to suggest that many of the engineers feel that the ice screws are in place. The mission manager certainly looks happy again.

Signals from the lander to the orbiter are apparently reported to be intermittent. Which might suggest the lander is at an angle or perhaps not in a stable position.

More images coming in apparently. Descent shot from the ROLIS camera:

It really is great, and all that...but here's the thing....Philae is tweeting, right? But....****twilight zone music***...it took off in 2004, two years before twitter was created.:hmm:

Do the math sheeple....they ain't there....it's a studio in Nevada. You heard it here first.
