Robots from Boston Dynamics and more

I posted this in the bandwidth thread the other day but might as well plonk it here too.

That robot is going to end up killing them all and they've only got themselves to blame. Be doing us a favour.

I for one welcome our new robot master.

Yes that's the joke
It's no joke. Ain't you seen that documentary iRobot with Wills Mith.

p.s. Their poors and obvious attempt at a humorous trope is why they deserve to die.
Stick to engineering and leave the comedy to funny people.

Hugely impressive engineering and articulation, but I think my interest will *really* be piqued when we start seeing what the AI can do.
That might be a lot more scary than an expensive dancing puppet.

Judging by current progress of ai I think the mechanical aspect of robotics will be more scary than the intelligence aspect for many years to come. General AI seems to be a long way off.

Exactly my feeling on the matter.
I think even 'proper'* self-driving cars are at least 3 decades away.

* - by which I mean something you can message from your phone (or wetware implant), and have it come pick you up from the pub when you're pissed

I think it's amazing that humans can do acrobatics.
Robots less so.

When it can clear up my dishes, wash then, stack them in the cupboard then start cooking a casserole from scratch for my next meal...

If I was going to live long enough to see the return, I'd bet strongly against them developing a robot that could change a duvet cover and do the ironing in the next half century.

The public might spend £1k on a robot.
The military will spend £1mil.

Guess who their target market is?
These videos are public relations exercises.

Or give you a satisfying wank with absolutely 0.0% chance of every malfunctioning and ripping your old man off.

Some chap with a book to sell was saying that we should all be very worried because robots' intelligence, unlike ours, develops exponentially with the result humans will be brushed aside like stick insects.Didn't catch his name or that of his book but I wonder,Karl Pilkington-like, why robots would want to do that ,or indeed do anything? Like Marvin hopefully they will have motivation problems and therefore we don't need to worry.

Lol, the "military" might buy 1000 robots. The market for something that does the dishes and hoovers for £1k might be in the order of about 1 billion households and several hundred million businesses would find applications.
That said these kind of machines do not yet show much in the way of endurance and independence.
It is far more likely they will be doing warehouse work for Walmart, Amazon and Tesco before they are anywhere near a battle field.

I am deeply suspicious of Boston Dynamics.

Their robots get ever more clever and agile.

And their suitability for military applications become more and more likely.

It's no secret that they've been funded by DARPA for about a decade, and that the robots are being made for the American military.

TBF as a country you wouldn't want to produce stuff like this, use it only for getting cats out of trees, and then sit back while other countries copy it and invade you etc
