RIP David Bowie

it was amazing wasn't it? I have no memory whatsoever of the rest of the weekend, and was physically & mentally totally exhausted (and peaking on acid) by the sunday night, and yet can remember it clearly - how utterly joyful it was in that field. And they nailed every song.
(Sorry, didn't notice this before)

Looking back at the line up, the only other bit I might remember is Elastica having their streaker on, although that might have been an earlier year. I was a bit dubious about Bowie before it started, Hours was rubbish, Earthling...patchy. But he was absolutely brilliant, even the slightly dubious choices (Absolute Beginners, Hallo Spaceboy) sounded pretty good, and, well, what a selection. Heroes was just one of those moments

it wld be massively dull...was just venting out of frustration at him sat there on Beeb 1 with L Laverne, pontificating...when you think of all the people who's work / music etc actually reflected / was inspired by Bowie over the years, and they end up with a tax dodging, arms pimping Christian square .

Anyway, will shut up.

No problem with your Jeremy Vine-hate -- I can't stand him myself

But the programme itself wasn't actually too terrible IMO, given that they compiled it today.

Blimey - Will Gompertz saying:

"He had something important to say....like any great artist he was able to reflect the world back to us and not only make sense of it for us, but also to guide us. And I think that's why we're deeply sad about his passing today - because we've lost a crucial guide in our life to make some sense of the crazy world we live in"

I don't know why these commentators have to make everything so much more exaggerated than it is.

I absolutely gutted about this. I've been a huge fan since I was a kid, it really feels like the world will be a worse place without him. It's the first time I've shed a tear over the death of someone I never met. And I won't be watching the Blackstar video again for a long time!

I hate the way people who die from cancer are always described as 'battling' and this has come out again with the coverage of David Bowie's very sad death. You don't battle with a broken leg or a heart attack. Having watched my mother and husband die from liver cancer which is what the press are now saying he died from, there is no battling. It rampages through the body and there is nothing, nothing, to be done. The implication that if people tried harder with their 'battle' they could have beaten it is horrible. Courage is a different thing. RIP David Bowie.

Indeed.

Liked your post susie12 but mainly because who are the media to say or imply that David Bowie was 'battling' (implication : 'bravely')?

When for all we know (and I'd probably rather we didn't) he could well have been just as scared/depressed in his darkest moments as anyone else.

Of course. It just seems to be something that's always dragged out about cancer, as though it were a matter of willpower.

I think it was in the press release his own publicist put out (Davidbowie.com)

Dying 2 Days after the album came out,... I'd go with battling, having hadmates die of it that bloody mindidly having done staying alive til their kids have reached life markers, it's not really about courage bit it is heroic

This feels as bad as the day (aged 18) when I keeled over onto the floor when I heard about Hendrix.

My son woke me with the news very earlythis morning - only taking it in now.

Now I know I am old :(

I sort of regret posting this. Not coz what I said, if anything a topic I'm up for quite a deep conversation on, but I've in terms of stuff to do, I've got the week from hell, on top of trying to help my brother and his wife who ARE having the week from hell.

Will be a manana manana response

and bowie also responsible for one of nirvana's best moments!

I was 12 when I first heard Nirvana and I actually heard them unplugged before I heard them plugged in. They were the first band that properly turned me onto music and it was this song that really stood out to me with that riff. I should imagine lots of people my sort of age first heard a Bowie song through Nirvana, shows just how influential he was.

If it was... ok.... it was in spite of Vine. Why did they use him? He seemed to have no particular interest in it and kept saying odd things.

Poor quality, and I'm guessing at 39 minutes this isn't the complete set , but maybe someone else can find a better/longer version?

I was onsite, but missed the 2000 gig for no reason that's forgiveable :(

Those who were there say told me it was a superb gig.

It was! i was only posting about it on the other Bowie thread a few days ago...:(

Saw the Martian the other day this song brought back a lot of memories of traveling to see the Grandparents and aunts and uncles. Bowie was the sound track of my childhood, 1976ish to 1985ish. Such sad news.

Somebody did a piece on this in the last few years - a standup I think. I thought it was Doug Stanhope, but I can't find any link now.

But whatever my faulty memory, I was thinking today what your are saying. You've been fantastically succinct though. "You don't battle with a broken leg or a heart attack."

Best to you and yours.
