protests may be banned altogether says Met chief.

they will have to arrest everyone who goes on every protest. Then we can all live for free in prison.

So the proposal is to ban marches because the police resources to control them are being taken away from normal police duties. How do they propose to police the banning of the marches?

:D

Maybe use the "workless" and some pensioners. They could call it the Pig Society.

They'll probably try and enforce it, in the unlikely event of it actually being enforceable, by going after organisers and those they suspect of being organisers.

I'm going to protest the banning of protests. I may get stuck in an infinite loop though.

Seriously, what reaction do you think would happen if they went ahead with this?

i **hope** that there'd be protests ... i hope ... sadly a lot of people think anything more than writing to your MP is a bit dodge

Seriously banning protests??! all they need to do is start placing pictures of the great leader kissing babies on every public building and they're off ...

police already have the power to 'ban' marches. You must apply for permission in order to hold a march. The police can refuse that permission, or rescind approval of an already agreed march. This is nothing new.

There is no legal power to ban, stop, prevent a public assembly ie a static demonstration. There is no such thing as an unlawful static demonstration. There are police powers to limit the size number and duration of static demonstration, but that's only if you're willing to play (snooker) ball with them.

Like I said on the thread already posted about this topic, it sounds to me more like they don't want to ban marches, but answered the question 'is banning marches an option?' with a yes because obviously it's always an option, just not a very likely one.

Yeah. This is all bluster. Same as the talk of water cannon etc. The demonstrations haven't actually been that violent (yet) It's a way of them saying "what we can do" It's a threat and a warning of things to come if the fightback really starts. The thing about liberal democracy is that it suits the ruling class. The fiction of democracy is a mask with which to hide behind and a cover for the kinds of policies they want to implement. It's a velvet glove. And the thing about a velvet glove is that once it is taken off, it is very difficult to put back on. So fiction or not, democratic principles are not something they will abandon lightly. Better to rule by fooling than with the iron fist. That doesn't mean the glove won't come off when it is necessary, it's just that we are not there yet.

Whatever ...ocracy you have, it suits the ruling class. It's just different ruling classes. Doesn't mean that the ruling class shouldn't be given a bit of a fright from time to time though.

ETA: The fact that they are talking about water cannon and banning marches means that the students have shaken them up a bit. :D

Absolutely. a glimpse of the iron fist under the velvet glove is in our interests. The recent actions of the police has politicised a lot of kids forever who will never forget the lesson.

I think this might be an example of the Overton Window - it's not necessarily that they want to ban marches but rather that all the talk of banning, water cannons and rubber bullets is an attempt to shift the terms of mainstream debate in case they want to try and do this further down the line.
