Perry Mason (HBO 2020 reboot)

T & P

Currently being shown on Sky Atlantic. A couple of fundamental differences with the original 1950s series, and not just regarding the general tone.

It’s decent enough but not spectacular so far. For many years I’ve regarded HBO as having the Midas touch and having the ability of producing nothing less than excellent stuff consistently, but while not bad this does not look like it’ll be one of their most memorable efforts based on the first three episodes.

At the end of episode 5 it becomes clearer where it's going, so if like me you aren't especially enamoured of the first few episodes it might be worth hanging in there until then before bailing.

I’ve finished it. It definitely gets more interesting in the final episodes, though overall is not particularly memorable. They’ve used the entire series to outline the origins of the character and how he became a lawyer so all set up nicely for S2, but I can’t imagine many people will be eagerly awaiting the next season. Can take it or leave myself.
