Oxford Circus station bombed on Christmas day (graffiti)

Maybe it's not a good thing or a bad thing but just an inevitable thing. Unless you want to live in Singapore there's going to be graffiti. It's possible to admire the effort and some of the art without encouraging it and condemning it on a message board is a fairly impotent act. I enjoyed looking at the photos and some of it was quite good. Yes, someone's going to clean it up but TFL already employs people to do that. TFL's ongoing financial crisis has a lot more to do with the wankers running the country than it does with this little venture.

That's the kind of justification people use when throwing rubbish on the floor.

I doubt it'll cost TFL any extra but the grunts cleaning out unavoidable mess on the tube will have had to clean this up as well as part of what would usually be a quiet shift due to the lack of trains going during the day, and I bet none of them thought yay, what a great way to spend Christmas Day, I really want to stick it to the man now, the anarchist signs I'm scrubbing off the floor have really swayed me towards the cause.

I quite like the graffiti on the trains in some places, so I'm not sure why this rubs me up the wrong way.

Actually come to think of it it's probably mainly because it's artistically shit and most of the readable words say things along the line of covid is fake. So my guess is that the people who did it are total fucking arseholes.

I'm struggling to work out why you think this is a good thing, Bahnhof Strasse. Unless you are desperate for a tattoo and this gives some sort of vicarious satisfaction.

I have made no comment either way as to whether it is good or bad. I dislike shitty tagging but quite like a decent piece, here we have both. I do however find it amusing that a crew could make their way to such a high profile station and spend a considerable amount of time doing that, then leave and no one sees anything.

Would it be funny if someone brazenly tagged your Audi your while it was parked on the street?

There's always big pieces like this over the holidays because it's the only time the tube's closed for so long so they'd be expecting it and it wouldn't 'usually be a quiet shift'. They wouldn't have cleaned it on Christmas Day given it wasn't found till Boxng Day. And no one's suggested that it's effective political propaganda.

You started a thread about it - that looks like thinking it was a good thing.

I like graffiti, even shit graffiti tbh. In the same way I appreciate a kids drawing is still art and how you see they've enjoyed expressing themselves. But graffiti is different in that its breaking the rules. It heartens me to see people breaking the rules, staying up late and going on a mission with a gang of mates like that. I don't think it does hurt anyone. When I see it I feel the buzz of excitement they must have had rushing to finish it before being caught. I'd hate to live in a world of moaning +50year olds where nobody ever daubed a cock on a wall. Imagine that...everyone being so docile and rule following that nothing ever changed. *shudder.

+1 for that in general.

This one just annoys me though. Probably because when I get the tube I like it being clean and simple so you can ignore the ads, and just go on your way to work. It feels safe; I don't want an adventure on the way to work. Leaving this sort of stuff up would put paid to that.

And again also because it really is shit. "Covid lies."

My old flat was graffed sometimes. It didn't make me think yay, I live in a vibrant area. It reminded me that people thought our area was shit and should be sprayed on, because it wasn't a home, just a wall.

the problem with Art proper is it is all done by rich middle class men with all the time in the world. P.S Kroyer - the portrait of the artist his wife and his dog. How fucking long did that take, to be in the painting and paint the painting?

To get in and out of banned places (its a tube station, not Scafell Pike) and expressing yourself, is far more impressive than sitting around like a cunt for 15 years with your muses.

Graffiti shows we are not just in a matrix. That its possible to think outside the confines of what is and isnt allowed. Its been going on for years. Far longer than fucking advertising which we have no say whether or not we are exposed to it.

I have huge respect for graffiti artists. They make cities come alive.

I quite like graffiti but that is a fairly lame collection of no artistic merit, tagging is so last century

Even the ugliest graffiti is fine as long as it's not just tagging. Not my thing but at least it's effort and an attempt at expression or selling something.

Tagging is just shit and if you do it your a twat. Put some effort in lads.

Fair enough. Each to their own n that. I don't equate order with feeling safe personally, I think its an illusion. I feel safer knowing there are misfits, creatives and outsiders leaving their mark and showing us they exist. Also I think its rarely done as a mark of disrespect for an area. Its more like claiming the area as their own and saying 'I live here too'

a cool tag takes some effort to come up with and to spread all over a city.

I’d love to follow these cunts home and spray paint their rooms, TV’s, clothes and possessions to see how the fuck they like it when it’s done to them.
That's OK, because I'd quite like to surround the homes of quite a lot of Kensington & Chelsea's leadership, and quite a few of those in the cladding business, with polystyrene and set fire to it "to see how the fuck they like it when it’s done to them".
