Osama bin Laden killed by US forces in Pakistan

His card was marked the moment the helicopters took off. If he'd been naked and tied to a flagpole they'd still have shot him.

They went there to kill him.

Job done.
He might have had one of those 9/11 holographic missiles under his arm though.

Interesting article here about the photo of Obama and co watching the assault on Bin Laden. He notes something I hadn't really noticed. Look where the pres is sitting

Yes, but Obama is clearly the focal point of that picture. In addition to his recognisable face, he has the grim expression of a fearless war leader.

edit, this link was posted on the last page........

but that guy does have a water pistol behind him. Some serious terrorist fire power :D

I don't see what that would prove - does anybody think the Navy SEALs would have been to squeamish to execute him with a bullet to the front of the head?

Jay Carney, White House spokesman, said that bin Laden had "resisted" capture or surrender, leaving SEALs no option but to kill him.

John Brennan, Mr Obama's counter-terrorism chief, said that the SEALs would have accepted surrender only if they were 100 per cent sure that he "did not pose any type of threat whatsoever". That included the certainty that bin Laden was not wearing a suicide belt under his clothes.

Sounds like the only resistance bin Laden would have had to offer to get shot would have been to look like he was going to put his hand in his pocket or something, I expect his death would have looked very much like an execution.

That's how I see it. They assume he's going to be armed (with his trusty klachnikov at the least), so aside from the flagpole scenario detail above, there was no chance he was getting out alive.

I don't think it was a Home Alone style "I'm gonna give you to the count of ten to get your ugly, dirty kietschter off my property" before unleashing a hail of bullets screaming "This one's for Chandler" (which I think a lot of people want to believe).

bin ladens trial would have been a massive media circus so kill him thats what soldiers do bad guy kill him.
the idea that its some sort of game and you can throw your hands up and surrender and be treated to tea and biccies is laughable.
the fact anyone in the compound lived is proof the seals used precise firepower.
the russians would probably have killed every one and put bin ladens head on a stick:(

Yes I do. She says he was executed after capture. Do you think that fact is unimportant?

Yes. Couldn't give a toss, he's brown bread, I don't care how it came about, just glad it did.

In your haste to believe the entire narrative of the Obama administration...

Where have I suggested that? The only bit I totally believe is that he's dead, I don't need to see a photo, which could be faked, to confirm that.

One armchair warrior talks to another.

Absolutely. Despite the smiley veneer we're still in the Dark Ages really.

Quite, take away the technology and the advances in medicine and we're still where we were, psychologically and socially, a thousand years ago. If this is modernity, then I'm the angel Gabriel.

I was too tired to deal with this last night:

Here is a what if for you, just for conjecture. What if. What if Bin Laden's daughter is right and BL was executed after capture. Not an entirely unreasonable conjecture. After all the narrative has changed slightly in details over the past 24 hours or so.

She probably is right. The US has practically admitted as much, "he was unarmed when he was shot". Now whether he was shot while offering some token unarmed "resistance", or knelt-down in a courtyard and popped in the back of the head Russian style, is neither here nor there. Let's assume that the latter, (more distasteful?) scenario is the reality. The Americans are not going to confirm that, though they may not care that people think it.

The assassination of Bin Laden is far preferable to the west than his capture, and this notion that we should have stuck him on trial is pure nonsense. Put him on trial, then kill him? There is absolutely zero upside for the west in putting him on trial and a hell of a lot of downside. So they've kept it simple.

I predict that by this time next week most media won't even be leading with Osama Bin Laden, and in 12 months it'll be Osama Bin Who? Given due process he wouldn't be off the front pages for years.

Bin Laden was an evil pig whose assassination is a huge victory to the west, albeit primarily symbolic. Due process does nobody any favours in his case so they killed him. It's an abject lesson in realpolitik, simple as that, and in this case, quite correct, imo.

Given the couple of hundred fabulously informed and beautifully analysed posts you've made over the last few months, I find your position on this thread strange, Dylans.

You've dropped the ball here. You may not agree with his execution but you must see why he was executed, so demanding proof that he wasn't, is totally sterile.

Nope, just wanna see a pic of him as he floated off to 'paradise'. Call it schadenfreude.

What do you want to see pictures of a mutilated body for? Get a fucking grip.

'Make 'em laugh, make 'em cry...'

Not only that; the technology guarantees that the barbarism affects the maximum number of people. It won't stop until we've brought about another real Dark Age. And probably not even then.

Well, we develop much of our technology to serve military needs.

That's what I mean: the means to inflict the maximum number of casualties get better all the time. Add to that the fact that conflict is always guaranteed...

One day soon the means of mass destruction will slip out of control of states. In fact it's already happening. Which I suppose is what this is all about. But far from the subject of this thread being a reson for everybody to rejoice, we need to remember that that all that's happening is a belated and futile attempt to contain the monster we've created. And I don't mean Osama and his chums.

Aye, remember the much-heralded neutron bomb?

I guess that he was unarmed suggests that he felt safe at the compound. In all his videos he was never without an AK47 by his side. I guess he must have forgotten that precaution in the compound and therefore could not go out fighting.

There was a leak somewhere. Google reported that searches for the name "bin Laden" peaked before the raid was announced.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/05/03/bin-laden-google-searches_n_857267.html

Peak is 20:00 - 21:00 Pacific time.

That's 23:00 - 00:00 Eastern Daylight Time; 04:00 - 05:00 British Summer time, 03:00 - 04:00 Greenwich/Zulu time, isn't it?

Reuters page from when they'd confirmed the announcement was announced:
