:hmm:

im convinced,good riddance

Dropping troops into hostile lands beneath radar comes to mind. I'm sure the SAS have used it on many an occasion. And don't forget, we hear about 1% of news regarding spec ops missons.

Using HALO to insert personnel in a general area works VERY well. It's not, however, that amenable (especially in urban environments) to inserting personnel and materiel into something like a compound, even a large one. Who would want to risk half their manpower landing outside the walls?

Seems very strange that he was buried at sea. Surely he could have been buried at a secret location after pictures were posted all over the world.

Any news on if the reward money is to be paid out?

I wonder if there is some eligable informant hoping to get rich on this.

Big bank holiday weekend for the media this!!

Hard to know what to think or say on this. Been loads of lies over the years and odd way to announce this compared to US dealings with Saddam. Guess there is more to come :(

Obama will have asked for no pics to be released. soldiers may have disobeyed and some may emerge later, but not now.

he's definitely dead, Obama would not risk his name calling it otherwise - if he later emerged Obama would be a lame duck president and a laughing stock for life.

its possible that he was killed years ago and they knew this all along bla bla bla. don't see why though. no rationale to that line at all.

anyway. great news, but doesn't change things materially in the here and now.

We are not ALL "whooping in front of the camera." Some of us are reflecting - sadly - on how many people have died and how many lives have been disrupted. And we also wish it never had to happen - meaning 9/11, 7/7, and all the deaths that have followed. But there are almost 300 million Americans and you cannot make such a broad statement because it is not factual.

^This.

Photoshopped

An image apparently showing a dead Osama bin Laden broadcast on Pakistani television and picked up by British newspaper websites is a fake.

he bloodied image of a man with matted hair and a blank, half-opened eye has been circulating on the internet for the past two years. It was used on the front pages of the Mail, Times, Telegraph, Sun and Mirror websites, though swiftly removed after the fake was exposed on Twitter

Do you think he's still alive then?

He'd be 129 years old or something. Course not.

Facts being what they are, it's likely he fled to the south of Argentina and died there in the early 60's.

I hate conspiranoid theories, but on this - we were lied to.

The USA let him escape.

not really. they wanted to abide by his religious beliefs (24 hr burial) for international PR reasons. they couldn't exactly fly to some remote part of pakistan/ afghanistan to bury him after the operation, that's absurd. and would have led to a shrine for the cunt.

he'll have been flown to an aircraft carrier, they'll of tested the fuck out of him and taken photos etc galore, teeth sculptures etc. then dumped him in the sea. good. we'll probably never see that stuff, but they will have it. same reason again btw, international PR.

absolutely nothing unusual in the way this was carried out imo.

Why would Obarma order no pictures to be released? He certainly wouldnt ask seeing as he's commander in chief. The only rationale I can think of for Bin Laden being killed years ago and the info not being released is they couldnt confirm it. But it does help the US's leaving plan of Afganistan next year.

You're both missing the point. This is the photo that has been shown on several news channels as evidence that he's dead.

It is, clearly, a manipulation of an earlier photograph - a fake.

Yes, so? You may not have noticed, but news media outlets lie all the time.

Its absolutely different to lots of targeted killings the US has carried out. Che Guevara, Al Zaqwiry (AQ in Iraq), Saddam Hussein, his sons and lots of others in the US's pack of cards to name a few.

simply because its distasteful and would garner more anti-US hatred. because its the right way to do it basically, for many reasons. and because he doesn't need to - not many US voters will be debating this in October 2012.

if they couldn't confirm it then it goes back to the same point i made before, there's no way Obama would have pinned his entire name, legacy, place in history etc etc on him being dead. because sure as shit Bin Laden would be on youtube by the end of the week making the biggest cunt of him you could possibly imagine. and he' wouldn't risk that.

The US didn't target the killing of Saddam, he was handed over to the interim Iraqi government to stand trial for crimes committed in Iraq and sentenced accordingly.

ETA:

Also reports are saying Bin Laden was shoot in the head, there's a chance that there may not be enough of his face left to ID in a photo anyway.

So the photo has been presented as evidence of his death. A photo that some posters have cited as convincing evidence. Showing it to be a fake is therefore importat in order to demonstrate that thus far no photographic evidence exists. The only evidence of his death is the word of Obama. Not saying he hasn't been killed but it is reasonable to expect more than Obamas word on the matter as evidence. I want a photo dammit

which were all different from eachother themselves.

this one had yet more different circumstances; context; geography; personalities (military wise); operational requirements. etc etc etc.

as for SH comparison - where would he have been tried? would have created big problems for Pakistan having him illegally extradited. this way the debate is over before anyone even knew about it.

I'm certain parading around the body and/or photographs would only inflame the situation and cause more deaths. It might even be a war crime to do so.

Yes of course. An ordinary Arab bloke will take one look at a photo of a dead Bin Laden and instantly turn into a rabid maniacal nihilistic suicide attacker.

(your war crime comment is just bizarre. The US were quite happy to post photos of Saddams son's in their gory glory. They were happy to post photos of Musab al-Zarqawi's bloody corpse too)

Excuse me, but I didn't say that. Don't put words in my mouth. The US has been criticised (rightly in many cases) for being insensitive to Muslim traditions and international law. Releasing photos would only confirm that opinion in many minds. And photos or not, there's going to be conspiracy theories on this for years.
