The synare is fun and everything, but tbh it rarely comes out. I wouldn't spend $400 on a battered one.There's a MK3 Synare for sale on eBay atm. Looks like it was thrown in an industrial dryer with half a ton of cobble stones for an hour or so. Still works, apparently. That's $400. Or there's a good condition MK3 for $3,400.

very much depends on the style of music tbh. If it's song based it will def evolve round the piano and guitar. For groove based electro stuff I love the 808 - pro1 - juno 6 combo. I link them up: 808 for the beat, pro1 for the bass line and juno for arps / melody. It's dead easy for me to dial something in that way and to work on chord progressions. But it depends so much on the style and my mood and whatever is required.What would you say were the meat and potatoes of your studio gear, as far as just sitting down and getting an initial idea out? Synths or whatever.
