On this thread, we like synthesisers.

I have a Yamaha DX7 and an E-mu Longboard that I use mainly as a MIDI controller for ZynAddSubFx on my computer. I used to have a Roland JX10 Super and a Roland JV1080 module that had some great patches on. I had an Akai Miniak(Alesis Micron in disguise) that was fun for a while but I ended up selling all but the DX7 and the E-mu to finance other things. I have a set of electric/MIDI bagpipes that I'm thinking about hooking up to ZynAddSubFx but I don#t have a 3.5mm to USB patch lead though.

Midi bagpipes. First lol of the day! No fucking way! :D

What's a longboard? Is it a modular standard?

Well jel. I was thinking about just making this about modular but I thought it might be a bit niche and Urban proves me wrong yet again. What did you get first?

My first modules were a Cylonix Cyclebox (which I have since sold) Intellijel HexVCA (sold) and a maths I also bought a 152 HP *3 Lamond case which I still have, too big for me, going to sell, the case above is a Pittsburgh EP360 which is perfect.

To tell the truth the thing that made me REALLY enjoy the modular was the purchase of the Orthogonal Devices ER101/2 combo, such an awesome sequencer, before that I was sampling soundbites.

It seems like a part of the fun is trying out different modules?

I really want to get into it but I know me and I know that once I've started I'll probably end up with some giant Moog thing that takes over my house.

It's called Eurocrack for a reason.

I have since sold the Eloquencer sequencer (bottom left) because I have a Cirklon coming, and the Manis Iteratus ( sounds far too samey) but have an XAOC Odessa on my wish list to fill the space.

In my old house I had the use of these:

The Moog is a fucking beast.

The Sub 37 is my Holy Grail, face-melting. That and Ominsphere and I’d never go out again. I have Omnisphere already and that’s just a ridiculous piece of software that I could play forever and not need to look at another instrument.

I built one of these:

When it worked it sounded incredible. When it worked.

I built something similar. It never worked. Not once. Not even a tiny phaaart. Let me see if I can find a picture...

Ah! Here it is:

My youngest daughter got me it for Christmas. It was instead of the Ladybird book on synth people that she insists is on its way. It was a kit that needed soldering and she bought me a bloody soldering iron as well. Waited until after she’d said that she wanted me to put it together, there and then and I said that I would love but I don’t have a soldering iron, so sorry. After I had murdered it with the soldering iron she kept getting it out and playing Hark the Herald Angels Sing on it, as though she was at the pipe organ at Westminster with all the choir behind her. Complete with arm flourishes and quick glances behind her, to the choir. Obviously we haven’t spoken since.

I have this for my 'face melting' can use 12 instances, each with 4 parts with 32 part poly each.

Edited cos I'm a dumb cunt and doxed myself, lol.

Just checking, that’s not the serial number there too, is it?

Anyway, that sounds ridiculous. I am at the stage where I just change things, turn a knob and think “Imagine if I’d actually meant to do that!“

That's the id of the cards, not serial No, I have most licenses for powercore plugins, the effects are awesome, there is nothing native that comes close, plus no host computer CPU use-age.

How come? They’re hosted plugins? Never heard of that. Well, I have for samples but not for synths. I guess it makes sense.

You need TC Powercore Hardware, they run on the DSP chips in the powercore hardware. Hardware comes in 3 flavours, External firewire units with either 2,4 or 8 DSP chips or cards that uou plugg into your motherboard, these come in 2 Flavours PCI or PCIe cards both cards have 4 DSP chips on them.

You can get bargains on eBay, some for sale come with licences, there was a PCIe card on not long with a single DSP licence for Virus, so limited, if you are interested you need multi DSP licence.

The downside is that it is a dead platform, if the PCI card goes down with ny licences on it, that's it, you can't transfer licences.

Ohhhhh! I was reading a thread about these not so long ago. Are they from, like, 20 years ago? I couldn’t really work out what they were on about because I thought they were talking about a sound card.

Yeah, beringer bought the ip, they run at 96kHz 24 bit NP and use jBridge to use in 64bit environment nlike Cubase 10.5, there is an upside though, they are excellently engineered and there are very few reports of hardware failing.

Did Behringer just buy it to kill it off? I have to say, I quite like Behringer. I know people hate them but I think that’s a bit misguided tbh.
