On this thread, we like synthesisers.

Have you got your Osmose yet?
Yes mine arrived on December 30th and its a wonderful thing.

The internal synth engine certain has its uses and is very expressive, although I'm still mostly interested in using the Osmose to control other MPE synths that I have.

Awesome! Every time I see one it seems to have been iterated again. It looks solid now, from a mechanical pov. How does yours feel? What synths have you tried it with? Have you slept at all since you got it?

Hmmm. I might try and write something tonight. It's been years, but I have a decent setup. But latency...... I'm a classically trained pianist and when I play the notes are coming out behind my playing and so I give up.

Never been able to fix it.

Maybe I'll have a go at step programming or something slower.
I've got something in my head. All I need to do is keep repeating it so it's ingrained until after the kids go to sleep. If I hear an advert or something else I'll lose it.

I have literally written the best songs that ever existed but I forget them. Tonight's is very Godisanastronaught/maybes he will kinda vibe.

If I remember it after going through all the software updates.

It feels great and I am unlikely to touch another keyboard or MPE controller while I have a working Osmose, its a different experience and is the culmination of everything I ever wanted from an expressive MPE controller.

I have tried it with an OB-6 and a Waldorf Iridium and a bunch of MPE-capable softsynths. And also with an Expert Sleepers FH-2 for getting cv into eurorack. But I havent really scratched the surface with using it with any of those synths because to get the best out of it you really need to craft each patch to use it properly. eg a lot fo the expressive joy happens when your fingers become the envelopes, rather than relying on the traditional envelopes in synths.

I have had to sleep plenty since getting it otherwise I get migraines. And I have spent rather too long on the nerdy side of matters, eg studing its midi output in more detail in a midi monitor, learning about what benefits MPE+ has over normal MPE, and recently fixing the code of a VCV Rack module that can use MPE+ but was broken in that mode due to a small error in the authors code. I should really move on to the the actual sound design stage now, and far more practicing of playing it.

Have you thought about some kind of hardware/tablet/standalone device to catch your ideas on so you don’t lose them? Then the trudge through software will be more of a formality and not so pressured.

I find it's best to start the idea stage once you're sitting at your DAW than in your head; unless you know the exact sounds you're going for and how to attain them.

I'm here.

Managed to write the basics on some shitty Electic Piano setting. Sounds shit, but will sound amazing on a proper grand or something.

I made the family turn off the TV sound so that my notes didnt get polluted.

It worked. But doesnt work now because for some reason (maybe not using Cubase Pro 8 for over 5 years means I'm scrabbling around resetting and updating.

Fucking shit.

(Tis a top tune tho, if it ever gets out)

I'd always lose hours dicking about with sounds and completely forget what I'd planned to write. Totally agree with klang on this.

90 mins in now.

Nothing working. Everything updating. My brain frantically trying to remember the chord sequence etc after I managed to bang down the basics before the PC went "Ugh". Imagine how many world changing songs got stopped by technology

both and everything, depending on song, track, mood, time of the day, and everything else.

when I did a lot of soundtrack work it was important to have a huge collection of melodies and themes to fall back on....the amount of stuff needed at short notice can be very overwhelming. the more I had on my phone the more relaxed I was and I could easier get down to work.

but sometimes just the on-button and messing about with sounds can be inspiring too.
wherever the wind takes me, really.

the real killer is dodgy software or a messy studio that constantly needs re-patching and where leads are fucked. does my head in.

when deciding to work with a certain daw or certain outboard, the first thing to invest in has to be a decent computer and a decent hardwear set-up with good leads and lasting patch bays etc....the best synth and the fruitiest ideas are no good without the machinery actually working smoothly....

Ahh, how cool! Musrt be incredibly satisfying to have finally found your Grail. Mad what you said about your fingers being the envelopes.

Pre-mobiles I used to carry a dictaphone to sketch ideas. Now I use my phone. Humming, whistling, singing, beat boxing, anything helps....

YES! I do this too but I haven't taken any voice notes yet.

Do people still use Cubase? (Well obviously you do). I did back in the day but prefer Ableton nowadays.
All the cool kids use Ableton. I'm sure I would to if it wasn't a million quid or soemthing :D

I use Reaper. It has it's issues, but then I dont' make time to learn it, too busy writing stuff. I made a bunch of sketchpad song templates for my main synths and scribble stuff down that way.

The Lite version isn't massively pricey but you're limited to a number of tracks. The more expensive ones open the track limitation and also include plug-ins, which aren't massively great so probs not worth the money unless you don't have any effects whatsoever.

my ancient version of pro tools (8) has never let me down. I know it inside-out and it does exactly what I want it to do. I'd be fucked if I'd update to a now-version.

I've dabbled with ableton, but it feels a bit clumsy. I'm not used to it I guess....

Ok, I'll have to find it/them. I'm certain I have more than one. Might not get to it immediately but in the next day or so.
No worries. Thank you.

Though if there's someone out there more deserving, they ought have it. I'm not exactly DAWless, but I would like to at least so what all the fuss is aboot with Ableton

Music first, then work out what sound you want to play it with. The alternative is a never ending rabbit hole of tweaking sounds. A good tune will work with pretty much any tone, but the coolest tone in the world can't replace a decent tune.

To this end I've considered trading in my very fun, very capable, very complicated wavestate for something with maybe just a handful of presets and a nicer keyboard.

My first version of ableton (lite) was a gift from a mate. I eventually upgraded to Studio but in hindsight the mid-tier one was probably enough.

Unfortunately, some of the real power of Ableton is with the full Suite version that includes Max for Live, so you may not get a real feel for its capabilities.
However, you should get a feel for the 'session view' and jamming with clips. That is incredibly fun and inspiring.
