On this thread, we like synthesisers.

As this is the most current/relevant thread for all things studio tech, please enjoy. (long but excellent- he's a very interesting and likeable bloke)

This is basically 'the dream'

The Sub 37 is my Holy Grail, face-melting. That and Ominsphere and I’d never go out again. I have Omnisphere already and that’s just a ridiculous piece of software that I could play forever and not need to look at another instrument.
I keep eyeing up Omnisphere and it does some marvelous stuff but just sounds like the same old same old FM Synthesis which is what I don't want.

Well any synth is simply a sound wave, right? Oh god, what am I trying to say? I guess that what differentiates one from another are the paths that wave travels and, imo again, Omnisphere has some mad old routes through to your ears. I really don't understand any synth well enough to truly rinse it and so Omnisphere, for me, was a bit like getting off my push bike and jumping into a space ship but I did have a lot of fun with it. I don't bother with it now but if I had a decent amount of space for a full keyboard and some banging monitors then I probably would.

Thanks both. I only need 3 inputs but looking at mixers with more but they all seem to come with mic/line in bits and wasn't sure if I could use them or not. Maybe I'll start singing but probably best not. 😬
This was my only question when buying my first mixer. A Behringer because I couldn't find the answer to this and I didn't want to waste my money. Those mic inputs look very unique and not like they take a quarter inch jack. I went to a shop and they simply routed the sound out of the monitor and then walked off and left me to plug it all in. Not ideal and as I wasn't confident enough to ask my questions I just parped the keyboard a few times, tried to look like that was exactly what I wanted to do and only that and then left the shop non the wiser.

Yeah shocking stuff, especially as people had seen him at SuperBooth on fine form recently, and were expecting to see him at NAMM this week. RIP Dave.
Have you got your Osmose yet?

Also, sorry for the individual replies. It's how I roll.

I have Diva, Zebra 2, Hive 2 and Repro.

There's also a free version of Zebra, isn't there? Is it called Zebralette? Hive 2 reminds me of Omnisphere a bit. Is Repro their SH-101 tribute?

I think what I was thinking about when I posted about the Sub 37 is that Spectrasonics had just posted the Omnisphere update that midi maps certain hardware synths to underlying Omnisphere functionality and I really liked that idea. I'm not so enthralled now I have a better idea of midi and Moog.

I think it’s 2 synths in one: Sequential Circuits Pro 1 and Prophet 5.

u-he synths are among my favourite software synths. I really like Diva. Triple Cheese is worth checking out and it's free.
Diva is impressive. I'm not sure it emulates the Juno as well as teh TAL stuff, which is excellent (i just bought their old school sampler emulation and it is glorious). I have Zebra Legacy but don't really use it that much. Guess I'm no Hans Zimmer :D

Repro is their standout for me. They sound phenomenal

Isn't there a hardware midi add-on for the TAL-U-No that has the layout of the Juno?

eta: thar she blows!

Repro is two synths: the Pro One and the Prophet 5.

Zebraleete is the stripped down version of Zebra, but still very good for a freebie. Just fewer mod options and oscillators iirc.

Hive is good, but I think Pigments beats it with the extra engines and the ease of use. Omnisphere I have no idea about because there's no demo and it costs a fortune

I don't know I just use a midi controller. But the sound is so rich. The Arturia one can do a bit more, with a second lfo and eg, but the sound isn't there. The pulse waves are so strong

Ohhh! I think it was the graphics that made me think that. I have always wanted a Prophet 5 so I'll have to have another look.

Interesting what you say about the Arturia version of the Juno. I'll have a listen. The TAL synths and effects are truly excellent.

From what i've seen Repro Doe a fantastic job. The onboard fx are pretty decent, though not exhaustive of course. The mod options are also pertty decent. Arturia have updated theirs, but I've no idea how good it is since I don't need it and it's two hundred quid. I do want their Prophet VS though, so will have to wait till the next sale, or sell 200 albums on bandcamp :D

Ooooh! What albums would they be?

Hmmm. I might try and write something tonight. It's been years, but I have a decent setup. But latency...... I'm a classically trained pianist and when I play the notes are coming out behind my playing and so I give up.

Never been able to fix it.

Maybe I'll have a go at step programming or something slower.
