On this thread, we like synthesisers.

I hate to see these sorts of attitudes on this thread. Hardly encourages people to share details of their equipment, and I highly doubt it will result in more music being shared.

Well, it's ok to have an opinion. And it's ok not to share your stuff too. :)

The most excellent OB-E synth is now available for windows (original was mac only) and includes some new features and an endorsement from Tom Oberheim.

Its a bloody amazing soft synth.

Probably an obvious newbie question, but if I'm looking at mixing a set of inputs from some synths, drum machines etc - but not a mic then can I use the mic/line in inputs on something like this:

It has 2x stereo line in and 2x mic/line in. I'm wondering if I can effectively use this as 4 line ins and kinda ignore the mic bit?

Would this work? If so, is it still a shit idea for some reason?

Yes it will do that just fine but I'd get something with more inputs if you can, they always come in handy

Also, are you just using two stereo pairs or four separate mono line inputs?
It will be awkward to level four individual inputs as the channels are each set up to work as a pair with one level control for both inputs of that channel.

Thanks both. I only need 3 inputs but looking at mixers with more but they all seem to come with mic/line in bits and wasn't sure if I could use them or not. Maybe I'll start singing but probably best not. 😬

Got myself a Korg Wavestate at the weekend. Luckily I've got a week off in which to learn how it works because there's a hell of a lot to it.

Will post up some noises from it as soon as I figure out how to record stuff with no mixer, recorder or interface :hmm:

I wasn't thinking of splitting the two stereo pairs into 4 line inputs, more using the 2 mono line ins that the mic inputs have with the two stereo pairs to make 4 inputs iyswim.

This is how I have my drum machine and guitar, as I've not got enough stereo ins.

Works OK but have to have the gain set just so on both channels of each. I don't need stereo for the guitar all the time but some of the patches in the moddler I use sound better in stereo.

Sorry, my mistake. I wasn’t sure about the mic channels but looking at a different pic you can read it says “line”. I assumed from this pic they were mic only.

This is really helpful though as I hadn't thought that I could additionally split the stereo channels into two mono. As you said though, I then would have the issue of only having one set of controls for two inputs. Still, options are good. :)

have you considered something like this, which has more inputs, FX, built in USB sound card for almost the same price?

I used to have the bigger version of that, the 16 track one I think. Works fine as a USB interface and the mic preamps were good but don't get your hopes up for the onboard effects.

I'm now after something simpler that takes up less space on my desk, but a lot of the desktop interfaces lack stereo inputs for some reason.

That might be a better option, thanks. Do you use this?
Not this one but I've got a bigger mixer with the same features and they have all come in very handy - the USB sound card is great for just grabbing a stereo mix down of whatever you're jamming on without having to think about it too much :)

Sad news. Thought this thread the most appropriate to post it on. RIP Dave :(

Yeah shocking stuff, especially as people had seen him at SuperBooth on fine form recently, and were expecting to see him at NAMM this week. RIP Dave.

Based on his recent activities something may well have happened to him at the Detroit Movement Electronic Music Festival, or when travelling or socialising in relation to that event or moving on to NAMM. At least he was doing what he loved when the end came.

A bit more detail.

Unlike me, Dave was an avid athelete, cyclist and triathlete. He actually participated in the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon in his younger years, an astoundingly difficult physical endeavor. He even enlisted me in some of his strenuous hikes, including Mount Whitney, the back side of Yosemite's Half Dome, and Mount Shasta. I named our climb up Mount Whitney "Iron Man and the nerd". :)

Sadly, the healthiest of atheletes are no match for the roll of the genetic dice, and Dave developed some medical problems in his later years that no doubt contributed to his being taken from us earlier than many.

Smith experienced a heart attack while attending the Movement electronic music festival in Detroit. He was 72.

He is survived by his wife Denise and their adult children Haley and Campbell, who were with him in Detroit at the time of his passing.

Yeah I need that sort of tape echo in my life.

Boss have got two different hardware versions coming but they havent shown up in stock yet. RE-2 and RE-202.

I'll probably end up with Arturias emulation of it soon because they are offering me a pretty good deal on their entire suite of fx.

It is so odd but kinda genius. I love the way the slide and up down bits interact. If that's too technical let me know.
