On this thread, we like synthesisers.

Actually I use hardware for drums too sometimes. E.g. the usual 808 stuff on my old Roland SH-32 sounds pretty good. I sampled it so I can use them without having to plug it in. Yeah I know 808 sample sets are everywhere but this one just sounds... Beefier somehow.

Not so much the “rules”, but a knowledge of how and why audio works, and understanding what various processors are actually doing - as well as how they interact with each other - can really help.

I downloaded a demo of the Cherry Audio vst synth PS20, modelled on the Korg MS20. Their products are really cheap and pretty good quality. Unfortuantely, being a modular synth, I cannot wrap my head around the patch panel

Can anyone recommend a good cheap midi controller keyboard with a mod wheel?

I have an Akai LPK25 which is proabbly about as basic/cheap as it gets but it's playing up and I think I'm going to need to replace it. Can't really afford anything full size or flash though, thanks

Depending on budget, the Arturia keystep is fab. I recently got the new ‘37’. Absolutely love it.
Doesn’t have an actual mod wheel though, it’s a ribbon.

Sounds good, I have a lot of Arturia plug ins, thanks to them allowing license transfers, but this is a bit more than I can afford unfortunately

I think they made a lot of good choices when it came to getting the right balance of compromises in their keystep devices. I like their choice of key size and how their keys feel, and the mix of other features. They are wildly popular for good reasons.

What DAWs are people using BTW?

For me it's Reaper. Insanely good value and powerful.

Ableton or Bitwig but I'm trying to use hardware instead. I know much more about using software though, so that gets used more often than I want to as I get annoyed with the hardware not doing something and go back to the software.

I use Reaper although I've barely learned it, I just spend time making music.

I would say that means you've learnt it enough for your needs, no?

Tell me about it. Trying to get my Eurorack sequencer to talk to my gear via CV Tools in Ableton. I have 3 hairs left on my head.

Free Moog

Came here to say this. These are actual synths, for free. Some of the best actual synths you can buy, software or hardware. If you've got an Apple phone, iPad or M1 laptop and you were wondering what it's all about then get them! They will make you smile. It's the Founder, Robert Moog's birthday in case anyone was wondering what the catch is. Moog make enough money the rest of the year to take a few days off.

I would say that the smallest Launchkey, the 25 I think, would do you. You could even get the Mk2 for less money. The Keystep is very good but it's not as accessible as the Launchkey or as fun, imo.

use an Akai LPK25 little midi usb keyboard. It's not terribly flash but it does the job.

However recently I have been having problems getting it to work. Nothing has changed between sessions and it doesn't matter if i'm in the DAW (Reaper) or a standalone vst. I have to continually disable/enable and reset midi devices until it starts to register. Until then for no reason I can see it doesn't connect. No midi signal. It could be hardware or USB based, I have no idea, but the keyboard is consistently receiving power through the usb (i get a light indicating by pressing the octave button so i can see there is a connection).

Windows?

Send it back! Or at least contact manufacturer. Should have at least a year guarantee.
I could try, but I'd have to isolate the fault. I think it's either my usb connections, or the keybaord itself somehow. Could be a loose wire for all I know. I'm not sure it's the USB since it seems to draw power ok, just doesn't register midi sometimes (no awesome music when key is pressed).

I should upgrade anyway and get a better keyboard, but that's going to require a bit of saving up. Unless that nice Mrs Coffee decides to give legacy benefit claimants the same uplift as everyone else.

I bought it from Amazon, I've no idea what the guarantee is for that. I can write off the loss tbh if I have to

Have you at least tried a different usb cable? That’s quite a common problem.

I have issues with my USB synths on Windows 10 too. Usual advice is to disable power saving on the usb route hub in device manager but this doesn't seem to have fixed it. I have to power off / on the PC, not just a reboot.

Symptoms are really choppy performance . I'm not the best keyboard player but it drops loads of notes out I know I've actually played. Even in step recording.

USB midi reaper and windows 10 is a bit of a dodgy combo. No problems at all with the m-audio midisport interface I have.

Its probably still one of the USB standard connectors, just not one you are used to seeing. eg USB mini-B.
I think it's that. I don't have another so I can't test it.

I'm tempted to open it up and see if anything's loose but then I've just remembered I don't have a soldering iron.

At this point it's porbably best to use this as an opportunity to upgrade. I really could do with a mod wheel;
