On this thread, we like synthesisers.

I have it on a cooling pad. The pad itself does nothing (literally, the USB cable's fucked) and neve really amd any difference, but at least the underside is exposed. I'm not seeing any fluff. Perhaps it just runs hot in the heat!

I would check the operating tolerances of your particular laptop. If it's outside them then you have a problem. Most probably fluff unless you haven't had it long.

max temp for mine is listed at 105 degrees C, according to the internets.

Maybe i'm just worrying unduly. I give it a puff with some compressed air but it doesn't seem to be overly dusty. I'm not going to open it up and find out though.

Overheating of the CPU would tend to result in performance symptoms as there is thermal throttling of CPUs etc these days if they reach sustained temperatures over a certain level.

well that hasn't happened, thankfully.

i'm enjoying making my music right now. I'd hate to lose that.

Yeah I wouldnt worry about it, its easy to underestimate how much a device may feel hot or sound hot when still within normal operational range.

Just bought this 8 step sequencer kit.
£25!!
The other kits there look fun too.
Cool! That Atari punk one has quite a userbase iirc.

This is nowhere near finished. But I've bneen super inspired by imaginary soundtrack/retro synth stuff (and of course the mighty, if over exposed, John Carpenter).

Would love some feedback. It's meant to invoke the bluesy vibe of They Live, as well as pinching that chord sequence from Angelo Badelamanti (Go!).

Thanks for listening. It's probably not the done thing to keep posting half finished stuff, but hey :D

It sounds like a piece for some mad little vignette where the protagonists are sneaking around an underground bunker, looking for The Stuff and a zombie, who has somehow managed to hang onto her brains, literally and functionally, is following them around. She's a bit nervous because she doesn't want her bone top spraying all over the scenery but she would quite like to be friends. Then... dun dun dunnnn, they find... The Stuff! ARRRRRRGH!!!

I also like the harmonica. I am a sucker for harmonica.

eta: also, fuck 'the done thing.'

Thanks.

All we need is Sherilynn Fenn to do some dancing :D

The harmonica was fun to do. I have the arturia fairlight emulation and you can get some really glitchy gnarly sounds especially if you are less accurate with the loop times.

I updated the tune but can't edit the post any longer, so...

So I finally got another keyboard (Nektar SE49). The installation is a bit weird (I'm using Reaper).

It seems to be working but it does give me an error message saying that the device can't be found. So something isn't fully set up properly. The final part of the instatllation instruction says:

"Go to Preferences/Audio/MIDI Devices next and enable Port 1 for your SE25/SE49. The mode should be “Enable+Control”. The other SE25/SE49 ports should remain disabled."

I have no idea what that means. Do they mean the ID number when they talk about ports? What is "enable+control"? I can't see any mention of that nor of modes in the MIDI Devices menu.

Overall though it seems pretty good. I just want to make sure it's set up correctly. I'm off to take the old device to the Post office to return to Bezos HQ

When it talks about ports and midi, it’s generally meaning one output/input group of sixteen channels.
Older midi stuff used to just work within the available sixteen channels then newer stuff allowed for multiples of the sixteen channels and were then grouped as ports.

Each port is a group of sixteen midi channels

Eta...sorry, probably doesn’t solve your problem but might help to make things clearer.

So the ID thing is the port?

This is immensely frustrating, it's now not working. Nothing I do seems to get it to work. I just get 'error opening device'.

The SE49 has 2 virtual USB ports, as well as a physical one. Port 1 is the physical one, I would think but definitely check. I imagine (don't know, so don't take this as read) that the enable + control thing is talking about the USB ports.

In Windows only one application can access a devices MIDI ports at a time. See the troubleshooting section below for more details.

Deets.

I'm a bit lost with all this, I managed to get it working before going to bed so I haven't checked if that's fixed it permanently by booting up today yet. But this is confusing. The installation process from Nektar refers to ports but I can't find any reference to that in Reaper itself, just an ID number. I set this to 1 for both input and ouput, but I have two entries in my input window for the device and I don't know why. MIDIin2 SE49 and SE49. Just the latter in the output.

I don't know what virtual USB ports are I'm afraid. Is that like wifi or bluetooth?

Is there a Reaper user forum? Would be worth asking there I reckon :)

anyone remember Hammerhead? Great little windows based drum machine, fitted on a floppy disk. Bram Bos has done a 25th aniversary version for iPad. Looks fairly decent in a touchscreen groovebox way.

Aye. I have every one of his apps. Love them all like they were my children. Well, they're actually more useful to me at this point.

Oh nice, I've heard good things about those Nector keyboards.

In Reaper's midi device options, in the first box you see midi input devices. Windows can be a bit strange about naming them in my experience, especially if you uninstall / reinstall. SO if it starts with a number that doesn't necesarily mean the number the Nector instructions are referring to.

A bit like my Minilogue xd where you say
"I have two entries in my input window for the device and I don't know why. MIDIin2 SE49 and SE49."

The input referred to will be one of those, I'd try the Midiin2s49 one. If you right click on it you get a menu to enable control messages too.

you can also set a separate input channel for controller messages there too. So you can use the keys to send note information on say channel 1 and control info on channel 2, i.e. using the faders and knobs to control plugins, track volume etc. Although you have to do that bit, mapping controllers to things you want to control, yourself, there's no automatic template for Reaper AFAIK.

On your tracks now, you should be able to set the midi input as the Netctor including channel. Probably 1. If you're using other hardware you can set the output and channel in the track routing options. Or if it's all virtual synths, just choose insert virtual instrument from the from the insert menu where it does the routing for you.

Thanks. I seem to have it working now. The problem was that the entry in the output section shoudl have been disabled. A bit counter intuitive, but there you go.

I'm quite pleased with it. Having the mod wheel and pitch bend allows me to come up with ideas on the fly rather than having to 'imagine' what a bit of modulation would work on some parameter. Nice full size keys and a big keyboard as well. It's good stuff. I spent all day playing with my Cs 80 emulation and pitch bending with the ribbon and my attempt at that sound. Oddly it doesn't come in a preset with the arturia emulation.
