On this day 30 years ago, the (music) world changing single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was released by Seattle rock group, Nirvana.
It made Guns'N'Roses and all the hair metal bands seem (for a brief time) redundant.

Seven years ago today, Corporal Nathan Cirillo was murdered by a terrorist who launched a vicious attack against our nation and our democracy.
Today we remember and honour Corporal Cirillo, a Canadian hero who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. May he rest in peace.
The terrorist was shot when he entered the parliament buildings.

One of my friends was a 19 year old trainee police officer at the time, he and his colleagues were down there on body retrieval duty. Some of the bodies had gone ten feet down in the peat, very few were intact. A grim task.

The Hungarian Revolution 23rd October 1956
Here's a link to Peter Fryer's excellent book. He was sent by the Daily Worker to cover the uprising , it was written on the spot and completed with in a week or so. He was expelled from the Communist Party and remained a 'communist' believing in a Marxist more human society.
