Olympics 2024 - General Discussion

The same with the BMXers. They're all just so full of joy. And what they can do is totally bonkers. Been my favourite things at this Olympics.

The team pursuit is a thing of beauty to watch, the power, the synchronicity, the harmony, the team work 👍bikes costing approx. £60,000 😱
Gutted for Hayter falling off of his saddle.

Looks like team GB has won medals again so another day with medals, if I’m correct just 4 more days of Olympics so can they make it through to the end with a medal every day…

Carlin and Paul, feel the tension, the nerves 😱 not quite as close as Turnbull, but nothing could be that close.

Is English the language of the Olympics? There are many announcements in English, which would piss me off if I were French.

It seems to be bilingual. But when they do spy on the athletes chatting to each other yeh it seems to be English they're talking and most of the announcements are in English primarily. Which is a bit sad really but thats the way of the world.

I think all the announcements are in French and English. They certainly had two announcers at each of the events we went to.

Couldn't say for certain, but I think it is generally 'host language plus English' at the games historically?

French is the Olympic language so gets done first I think
Ah, is it? I could remember they got protective of it in one org or another, but thought it might be the UN.

So are announcements at games in other countries done in three languages?? Or is English not usually on of 'em?

I noticed at the start of BMX racing, the watch the barrier thing was in English. The track cycling also seem to be mostly English. Are you broadcasters mainly broadcasting the English announcements and not the French where possible?

Watched the USA v Germany womens' football semifinal, missed the 90 minutes but was 0-0 anyway but really good extra time.

Germany beat India at hockey. Now versus the Netherlands in the final which will be a grudge match

Trouble is I have no idea of when either of the finals are or whether they are on BBC

When I was in the Netherlands in the 80s I occasionally saw German tv, once showing a 5,000 metre race. It was very entertaining, the cameras just followed the German runner round even when they were last. You had no idea who was winning - they'd pretty well only show you the winner after the German runner had finished.

The Olympics' own schedule site is pretty good for this.

You can filter by specific sports, events and nations, set up 'favourites' for sport and nation for even quicker filtering, and 'favourite/bookmark' specific individual races/matches.

Obv doesn't help much with the BBC of it all, but if you've access to Eurosport somehow they've got a number of channels running diff. sports, too.
