I've just tuned in - Kaisen... keise... One Austrian rider 5 minutes ahead, then a large group doing the whole 'who's working?' thing?

Oh, they've just mentioned the two chasers.

Yeah I made a cup of tea earlier when three were together up front, and when I came back I thought they'd vanished back into the peloton. On screen graphics could be more informative.

Kind of surprised the Dutch aren't drilling it, I mean at the moment it looks like the medals are out of contention.

How did he pronounce it? (am on GCN+)

Boardman is a properly shit commentator.

He's been stubbornly saying 'Keisenhofer' for the last few hours. While his co-commentator valiantly pronounces it correctly 'Kiesenhofer' (this is based on my GCSE German of course so I could be wrong!)

And yeh, I don't know much about cycling but he's not a great commentator. Constantly interrupting the other guy.

The pronunciations of 'ei' and 'ie' are about the only thing I remember of my year of German evening classes and I agree with you.

That was an exhausting breakaway; I was on the point of tears when she lay down panting at the end.

Holy hell. Just woke up for the last 10km and couldn't believe the timings on the screen and was immediately cheering for the breakaway.
That was hilarious.
For those of you who don't follow cycling, think off the most dominant team you can think of in sport and that was pretty much the Dutch squad. They were 1st, 2nd and 3rd faves with the bookies and their fourth rider was also highly fancied.
Also, the Olympic races don't allow radios so that's a big reason why the Dutch were caught out. No radios make the race more unpredictable.

Have heard that a few times on the little bits of coverage I've caught; any notion as to why the Olympics don't allow radios?

It's more old school without radios. Fans love it, riders a lot less so as, has just been evidenced, it's so much harder to know what is going on and control.
Riders have become used to them in the pro peloton and the UCI (cycling governing body) are so desperate for new sponsors that they allow all sorts of tech.

I'd guess it's not fair on the riders who don't have a team i.e. there's only one entrant from their country.
But the rider who won was in a team of one. The mighty Dutch with the full compliment of four messed up as none of them can count how many riders they had to catch.
I've just been on a cycling forum and some people are trying to blame the organisers - sour grapes.

I'm assuming they meant radios would be unfair on the single rider.

Makes sense and thought it might be something like that, but also thought the radios might be used by the support team too which every rider, team or single, would have.

Exactly. If the Dutch had had radios, they would have had an unfair advantage over the lone Austrian, who didn't have any team mates to talk tactics with.

First "dusty ceiling" moment of this years Olympics, watching the winner's tears of joy start to hyperventilate! Then later she was all on her own, cos all the other countries have huge teams etc.

Chap bloody eau!

How do they get time gaps etc? You don't see much of the motorbikes... do they do the time card thing?

So they just completely forgot about Kiesenhofer? I saw one of the Dutch riders asking a cameraman what the time gap was, maybe she should have asked how many were up there.

I love it when a total underdog wins. She's 30, so has presumably been polishing the boots (so to speak) of those Dutch riders for years without them noticing her. The one who came second with arms aloft must feel pretty silly now :D

No time cards. There does seem to have been verbal messages become some riders were asking cars and cameramen for info. And clearly they weren't getting info given the silver medallist thought she'd won. I think it's great like this. They should ban radios on the tours too.
