Occupy Wall Street

:(

There have been numerous reports today that accredited journalists were prevented from witnessing the eviction of Zuccotti Park. Bloomberg is asked about this: he says the action was taken to "protect the members of the press. We have to provide protection and we have done exactly that."

from CiF

Media has been barred from entering and reporting, residents who live in lower manhattan close to the park are not allowed outside as NYPD are telling doormen to lock up.
NYPD is throwing away the 5000+ collection of books they had at the park into the dumpsters and laughing. If this doesn't tell anyone about the SAD STATE of "democracy" these it's hardly worth arguing.
Current update:
about 150-200, holding the line in the middle of the street and thus preventing the dump truck holding their shit from exiting the park

shocking

anything more about bloomberg being made to explain his actions and some kind of injunction?

The whole thing would've been done and forgotten by the end of September if they'd taken that route. Thank god there are cooler heads than yours.

So says the poster whose own pronouncements on protests are somewhat questionable.

If you'd have lived during the time of the Suffragette movement, you'd have said the same thing. Your gradualism (or whatever it is) is not a solution.

There is a bit of history here though. Look at the civil rights marches and hunger strikes in Northern Ireland, that started peacefully with non-violent pretensions, and what happened there? There was a vicious military crackdown by the British state, which led to more support for the violent path and the PIRA in the long run. Whilst comparing the policing of the Occupy protests to the treatment of the republican community in nothern ireland is obviously impossible, doesn't a similar principle apply regardless? All these occupy kids, especially in the USA, are going to have their naiveity crushed by police in riot gear tearing down their tents. Some of the things I've already seen have shocked me, especially in Oakland.

A whole generation is about to learn, that their constitutional right to free speech doesn't mean shit when you're critisizing Capitalism, those pesky "inaliable rights" are suspended once you turn your ire on wall street. What is the reaction to this going to be? It could just lead to burnout and resignation, or might something more serious emerge? To be honest I've been a loss, at times, looking at how tame these protests are, but they're on-the-whole a good thing that I support, but you can't change the system passively, they're gonna have to do something at some point and not just camp out for all eternity.

Arresting some journalists and barring others from the area was a risky move that may yet prove to have been very stupid.

Right now I hear that an earlier court judgement has encouraged people to return to the area, and a second court hearing is about to rule on whether tents etc will be allowed in the park.

The fucknuts seem to be lining up to soil themselves now.

Graphic novelist and screenwriter Frank Miller has posted a excoriating rant on the Occupy movement on his personal blog, accusing it of being an unruly mob of "louts, thieves and rapists" that can "do nothing but harm America".
Miller, best-known for Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, 300, and Sin City, introduces his post with the words: "Everybody's been too damned polite about this nonsense" before launching into his tirade.
He writes: "Occupy" is nothing short of a clumsy, poorly-expressed attempt at anarchy, to the extent that the "movement" – HAH! Some "movement", except if the word "bowel" is attached - is anything more than an ugly fashion statement by a bunch of iPhone, iPad wielding spoiled brats who should stop getting in the way of working people and find jobs for themselves" it reads.
He continues: "Wake up, pond scum. America is at war against a ruthless enemy."
"In the name of decency, go home to your parents, you losers. Go back to your mommas' basements and play with your Lords Of Warcraft. Or better yet, enlist for the real thing. Maybe our military could whip some of you into shape.
They might not let you babies keep your iPhones, though. Try to soldier on."

The phrase "biting the hand that feeds you" comes to mind.

From the Guardian live blog:

3.43pm: Despite a flurry of rumour on Twitter, our reporter Karen McVeigh, who is inside the supreme court building and awaiting the ruling with other journalists, confirms that nothing has yet come from the judge. Despite this, the hundreds of protesters outside the court, and hundreds more at Zuccotti Park, are celebrating wildly, according to our reporters at both locations.

Fuck me, is Joey Boots still alive!..I'd have thought someone
would have throttled him by now. Utter pricks every one of
those security people.

84 year old pepper sprayed.

The Occupy Seattle movement released a written statement late Tuesday expressing support for “a 4-foot 10-inch, 84-year-old woman, a priest and a pregnant woman who as of this writing is still in the hospital.”
Dorli Rainey is an activist who has supported liberal causes in the Seattle area for decades. A photo showing Rainey being cared for by fellow activists in the immediate aftermath of the police incident appeared on news websites around the world.
Seattle police spokesman Jeff Kappel said he didn’t have specifics on the Rainey incident, but he said pepper spray is “is not age specific. No more dangerous to someone who is 10 or someone who is 80.”

Pepper Spray: fair play fun and frollicks for 10-80 year olds...

What a cunt that man sounds. Where next for the occupy stuff then? 'Free USA Army'? heh... :hmm:

I guess you know it's been effective when they choose to shut it down!

That evil 4 foot ten, 84 year old woman must have really terrified those poor little riot cops.

Im glad to report that Darli is feeling ok and will be out on the streets asap with the regular 'women in black' vigil.... lol.. she is one of me oldest 'online buddies' and a proper inspiration.... this woman has lay out rough in solidarity with our street communities there and been a strong anti-war activist against bloodsheds before most of here were born (except sass of course :D)

This is going to go over well too

NEW YORK — A New York City councilman arrested during the eviction of Zuccotti Park says he was detained for more than 17 hours and denied access to his lawyer until just before his release.
Ydanis (ee'-DAHN'-ees) Rodriguez will provide details of his arrest at a news conference on Wednesday.
He said Tuesday that an officer assaulted him two blocks from the park as he went to observe the police action early Tuesday morning.
Police had no immediate comment.
Rodriguez was released without bail after being charged with resisting arrest.
A court complaint said Rodriguez tried to push past a metal police barricade and tried to keep from being handcuffed.
Rodriguez faces misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and obstructing government administration. He's due back in court Jan. 20.

From what I understand the OWS crew are regrouping and will be back in action soon...
tbh: realising that some may view OWS as the spark, the #occupy movement is still alive in the USA n beyond.. although further attacks are to be expected... gonna be interesting to see how this pans out, there is an online international meeting later today to plan the next stages... I believe in the words of Gerry Adams, 'they havent gone away you know'
I have been heartened to see the development in areas such as California towards occupation/liberation of buildings... which with the growing 'foreclosures' should resonate with 'joe/josie Public'

Ffs that is outrageous.

This by the way is total bollocks, Pepper spray as with all lachrymators have a much more severe effect on the very young and very old, especially those with respiratory conditions. The guy is talking out of his arse.
