Missing the glacial slow burner Scandi shows from yesteryear, where nobody was fretting about the pace. Probably because the plotting was usually well executed.

Well this was my feeling...The Harlan Coben-athons are the same as the elite scandi's, in that you need to know the plot points of ep's 1-6, but you are well aware that pinning any prediction on them being the actual whodunnit answer are meaningless, because there are x number of episodes to go....

But the HC stories are just so dull...With their Non Descript Major British City That Isn't London beigeness (in fact, most of my interest was fighting the filmmakers attempts to anonymise the location and guess where it was), and all the characters are equally 'so what'. Going back to the comparison with the 'good' 8 episoder whodunnits, you need to care about the characters. Maybe it because they are very English that they aren't interesting or multi-dimensional, but they are all very 'meh'.

I think the HC stories work much better as a Film*. I am a bit of a sucker for the style of guessing the plot point in this way, and wondering how all the loose ends were going to be tied up, but I want to do it over 2h, not 8h, (which also avoids the irritating "oh that? yeah, we were just lying about that" plot point retreat, which is incredibly irritating).

That said, I will confess I thought the ending was Very Good

The tie-ing up of all other plot points are like a tour-de-force of everything you shouldn't do. The payments to Kierce? Oh yeah, we're not sure about that. Seeing Joe? AI trickery. And I'm amazed people are still recycling the the Sixth Sense plot, especially here when it effects absolutely nothing else in the series apart from annoying the viewer. Essentially you are spending 8 hours trying to apply logic to the whole thing, only for numerous elements to be revealed as lies or irrelevant

I can't nearly BA to go back and check everything, but the Big Reveal only works if she acts consistent with the Reveal outside of interactions with other people. I'm sure she doesn't. Also, fundamentally she will sacrifice herself (and her kid being an orphan) to ensure that the tangential benefit (after succeeding in killing off her sisters murderer) of exposing her wicked Mother In Law's business? No chance.

*Tell No One (Tell No One (2006) ⭐ 7.5 | Crime, Drama, Mystery) is still one of my favourite foreign language films (and by HC). It does all you want from a HC-athon, in an interesting setting (France, with a lovely dog and Dustin Hoffman lookalike :) ) and it's all done in 2h11.

Things looked like they might pick up at tge end of episode 2 but Episode 3 was a snoozefest.
Ok I made it to the end of episode 4 of Fool Me Once, , but I think I'm out.
It's not 'shit funny' anymore, it's just boring and I couldn't give a shit about what she saw in ep one, nothing has advanced. It's also executed incredibly badly. Initially it was amusing, but now it's just painful. People are meeting each other on park benches like it's normal, talking for two minutes and walking off. The main protagonist woman, drives an hour to see someone who could have told her (information she already knew) over the phone. Then she drives off to her mother in laws place (this could also have been a phone call) and we first see them in the front room, not at the door. They are just standing there. She turns around "Oh hi, I was just standing here, in the middle of the room. What's up?".
The dialogue is atrocious and 95% of it would naturally take place on the phone or an email. Now I understand that doesn't make for great TV, but you shouldn't make reality bend to your shit script, you should make your shit script not so shit. Tell your story in a better way. This series needs a lot more show and a lot less tell. It's just people walking into rooms and saying the next bit of the plot to each other. . . .

Another shout out for MO
Why isn't this more popular? Much better than most of the bullshit I have been watching lately.
Just finished series one, it says another is on the way. I hope so.

I've been trying to download Mo as it isn't available here. It's hard to find, I now have all but 5% of episode 1 and all of the last episode. Bugger all point starting till I know if we can finish.

Brand new Asian-American black comedy/ action series The Brothers Sun looks and feels promising so far. Good reviews too

ETA: and it stars Michelle Yeoh, which should in itself be enough for anyone to give it a go :)

It's excellent. One of those series thought urban would be all over, but apparently not.

I have now watched the first two episodes (of The Brothers Sun), and it is an entertaining crime action comedy. Some crime, violence and killings, but the overall emphasis is on the lighter side of the genre. Not a classic, but still touching the 7/10 mark so far for me, and with potential to get better.

She is great un all, but she has been in a large amount of howlers, so not necessarily a mark of quality.
Yeah, then there's audience indifference, which is a shame. Disney have dropped critic friendly American Born Chinese which also stars her Everything Everywhere All at Once co-stars Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu.

On the plus side, Yeoh is to star in a (unfortunately named) Section 31 movie, continuing the adventures of Discovery's best character.

What does Section 31 mean?

Unfortunately discovery is what I consider to be one of her howlers. Yeoh seemed fine and all, but I just couldn't stick watching the show.

Currently enjoying Fool me Once a British mystery thriller, about a former army officer whose husband is murdered, but then she sees him. Lots of intrigue and cliff hangers. Am about half way through.
We love Harlen Coben, in the sense that they’re absolutely terrible! The Dan Brown of TV drama. We binge as a family and laugh at each twist, shout at the characters for their life choices, howl with derision at the inconsistencies, point out the things that wouldn’t happen in real life, and basically treat it like a pantomime.

I can’t imagine watching one on my own without the interactive element. They’re trashy fun, and absolutely nothing like a high quality Scandi Noir.

Watched about an hour of Rebel Moon. It's better than having the news on, but worse than silence.

It's being compared to Star Wars. An essential part of Star Wars is the comedy though, this is utterly bereft of any comedy whatsoever.

I might watch the last hour, but probably not tbh.

Apparently, in some interview, Snyder claims it's a crazy, original film with nuances.

He's trolling, clearly.

Seasons 1&2 were the best, season 3 starts well but goes downhill fast. It moved to Paramount after that, so haven't seen the rest.
I'm not sure I got to season 2. Actually I think I might have ditched season 1 and later had a go at season 2? Either way I didn't enjoy it enough to get very far and almost certainly didn't get to season 3. I did enjoy a couple of the shorts which as I recall focused on single crew member character pieces. These seemed much more in line with 'old trek' (not that I am invested in or think everything should be 'old trek') and much more interesting.

Season 2 was fire, imho and it introduced the Strange New Worlds crew and included a great callback to the original series.

Have you seen Lower Decks yet? Great fun and lots of nods to what's gone before, without overwhelming the actual stories.

Also there’s always at least one catchphrase based on clunky exposition. Just try to watch Fool Me Once without shouting out the full phrase “Claire Walker, her sister”! each time the character turns up or is mentioned. It’s impossible.

And, if you know the genre, you’ll know Richard Armitage is at the centre of the tangled web. It’s a format point. I think it’s in HC’s contract.

I'm not sure I really see the comparison with Star Wars. There's space travel, there's farmers and a bar. None of that is unique to Star Wars.

Perhaps the second half contains more obvious copying.

Oh right. I didn't see season 2 then.

Lower decks is probably the best current trek series. Nice bitesize eps. Slow start but got much better. Haven't watched it since it went to paramount.

Just finished the series now. Highly recommended. Absolutely hilarious ending. By far the most ludicrous of all the Harlen Coben’s I’ve seen. We laughed so much. You must watch it.

I simply couldn't. Just too fucking boring. People just endlessly driving from one place to another to have a two minute chat. 90% of whole show would take place over the phone in the real world.
I might have been able to bear it if it had been twice the speed and 75% less hollyoaks.

I'll have to look up some spoilers.

That's the kind of Barry Norman-style tongue in cheek review that makes it sound so bad that it's good.
