Nationwide, a shower of useless bastards

I’ve always been really happy with them and so has Mr Looby. Especially when they were pretty much the only bank willing to give us accounts. [emoji1] When my car went wrong in the summer he had a loan organised in 40 minutes.

They've been mostly OK with me. Actually worked for them half a life time ago. Weren't a total shower of cunts.

I've often thought one way to judge these folk is how they are when things are bad. I'll never forgive Barclays for pilling charges on charges when I was really struggling. Nationwide took away my overdraft which was a ball ache, but did come to a compromise. And didn't hit me with shit loads of charges.

Still annoyed they didn't give me a mortgage though so 19 years loyalties doesn't count for that much...

So despite being mostly happy with them for 18 years I do think they are taking the piss with a new overdraft rate of 39%. I know all banks will be increasing it due to how they are now allowed to charge customers, but still.

Had a Starling account opened in a few hours and offered a £1000 overdraft at 15%. Plus their app is rather snazzy as well.

These new overdraft charges are a pisstake. How has this been allowed to happen? I haven't seen much of a public outcry over it but its going to massively hurt many people.

Nationwide hit me for over £1,500 in charges on an initial £600 unauthorised overdraft in less than a year. Circa year 2000. There are no good banks and that includes building societies. No shareholders doesn't mean no massively overpaid execs trying to squeeze the margins as much as they can. In summary, they are all cunts. And tbf I never paid nationwide back a penny, have that building society members

But just to add, that period of my life I racked up a lot of debt very quickly which probably wasn't big or clever and it was mostly my recklessness, a little bit cos of an unexpected job loss and some other stuff, but mainly me being a young dickhead. But of all the banks and lenders I ultimately fucked off, nationwide were the most ruthless with their charges despite the cuddly fuzzy stuff about them being a BS. It was cos of them that I decided there was no point trying to deal with it and instead I just moved lots and stayed off the electoral roll for a few years

skyscraper101 its because they aren't allowed to charge the punitive fees anymore when people go outside overdrafts etc. But it's still a piss take. Fortunately its been many years since its been that close to bone for me, but until recently I have used overdrafts every month. It's actually cheaper to borrow on credit cards. Expect many banks to do this soon, they are just the first.

Proper Tidy funnily enough I had the opposite. When I was really struggling found them the most helpful and least punitive. They took my overdraft away once, but when I called them they came to an arrangement.

Same. I have lived in and out of an agreed overdraft for ages until recently. Fees like that would've killed me. Better to just get an interest free balance transfer card.

Almost 40 years ago, OH and I were searching for a good mortgage provider.
After being royally p155ed about by Lloyds and N Rock we went with N'wide.

We made a few alterations to the millstone over the years and moved house twice as well, N'wide staff were always very helpful.
But last year we paid it all off ... very satisfying ! Have kept the current a/c we had with it and I've still got the savings a/c I had from beforehand.

Not very happy with the recent reduction in branches, although they have remained resolutely a mutual.

Nationwide are still high on my list if and when I change banks and todays outage would not deter me. These things happen and could happen to anyone.

If it helps i transferred money to monzo and it took hours but at the same time I was waiting on a monzo to monzo transfer that also took hours. :hmm:

I got paid today (yay but January probably not so yay) and went into my Nationwide account fine. I've also just transferred some cash about and all looks okay.

To be fair they've opened a few too

So monzo had the same issue but maybe for longer and maybe not as widespread? Their app didn't say anything. At least nationwide did say.

I've been a Nationwide customer for many years (at least 35+) and normally not had any problems. The couple of minor ones were sorted pdq, with apologies and compo for the one that was their fault.
I have much more trouble with Lloyds (and I've been with them for even longer) doing weird things - losing credits and payments etc. And charging me for them when their fault took me past the o/d buffer ... that took me months to sort out, and compo even longer.

Other way round for me with Lloyds, been with the same branch since 1977, never had a problem.

I must admit, that almost all my lloyds problems were in the period when they were re-arranging the branch network - merging branches, mainly - which coincided with me "changing employer" as a result of two takeovers / mergers and then changing banks. Understandable, but still annoying.

" we are not like other banks, we are not about to close branches" so sayeth their adverts.
Well guess what Which Nationwide branches are closing in 2023? A full list of closures

The local branch also closed in the last year. bastards indeed.
It’s not a very big list to be fair and mostly relates to London which while annoying to those nearby probably isn’t as big a deal compared to the large number of branches other banks are closing in rural towns meaning many people are having to travel miles to get to their bank with poor public transport for those with no cars.
