My electricity bill has just tripled: how about yours? Alternative suppliers?

Just got an email from EDF. Bill has come down from the £70 I was paying to £37pm. Now will be interesting to see how that increases if I turn on the heating during the winter months

our direct debit amount has come down too (albeit by a smaller % than yours). it just makes me think they must have been really fleecing us before.

Utility warehouse is 18.08p for generated units and 6.79p for exported units.
Bit dubious though, the electricity tariff is the one they push as the loss leader but you have to sign up with them for something else which money saving expert says isn't such a good deal. Not keen on their marketing either, there's a few of them spam Next Door saying how good the tariff is but they won't talk about it unless you message them, by which time they can do the sales spiel.

What's the difference between 'generated' and 'exported' units?

Surely they are not charging you for what you generate and use yourself?
You tend to generate a fair bit more than you use, the rest is exported back to the grid at a miserly rate. I'm trying to have the dehumidifier on all day so I use as much as I can, with the rest going through a controller to heat my immersion tank.

You can sign up for whatever you want, electric, gas, phone, broadband or mobile and you can sign up online so no need for sales spiel.

MSE says "you have to take other products, too" besides the energy deals.

Utility Warehouse has two fixed energy deals that are up to 1% cheaper than the October Price Cap on average, making them among the cheapest 'open-market' (switchable) fixes available. Looked at in isolation, it may well be a winner over the next year.

BUT... it's not as simple as just switching your energy, as you have to take other products too. So here we give you the pros and cons of this somewhat controversial provider.

That's the Smart Energy Guarantee price - you can get better, much better. Octopus fixed export rate is 15p/unit if you import from them too and there's a variable one for solar/battery which gets up to 27p/unit.
But you would lose any feed in tariff.

When we moved my parents to utility warehouse we didn't move the PV over as dad had it installed years ago and was getting 43p per KWh FIT payments.

ah yes I just missed those because some twat at the installation company decided to delay my installation so I just missed the 43p (I was mates with someone at the company he didn't get on with), cost me over £10,000 over life of contract I think.

I'm on 27.85p/unit generated and 4.25p/unit export. I've presumed not worth changing.

Got an email from Octopus saying Ofgem price cap going up from January, and that they are currently offering a fixed rate tariff lower than January price.

Anyone else got this, and/or has any thoughts if this is worth doing?

It's impossible to know TBH, because the price cap is likely to drop again from April, once the winter pressure on gas prices are over, bearing in mind about 35% our electric is generated from gas power stations, high gas prices hit the cost of both fuels.

I got it, I also took the fix. I decided that certainty was the most important thing for me.

I don’t have the time to look into what the energy markets may or may not do. I just know that having fixed costs for the next year will be helpful

Utility Warehouse are an MLM so they can get to fuck. Dodgy company, and MLMs are exploit their "sellers" and customers which is why they do stuff like this.

Have they got reversible hydro yet? That would be one way to store wind power via the grid.
Or maybe the reservoirs and hydro dams are in the wrong places?

Hydro and pumped storage capacity in the UK isnt amazing, havent looked into it but also havent heard of any plans to radically change this picture. I'd guess that picture will remain largely unchanged from the pre-wind power era.

We certainly do need all sorts of storage options to make the system fit for purpose going forwards, and the BBC article doesnt even mention such things, concentrating only on transmission.

I took advantage of having a smart meter by signing up to British Gas Peak Save where they declare a peak period (usually Sundays so far) and if my usage that during that period is less than what it was on the last corresponding non-peak save period they will knock the price of the difference off my electric bill. During November my first full month of being on it, it has resulted in 95p being credited to my account. (so effectively I have saved £1.90 since I didn't use the 95p leccy and I got credit for it as well) Hardly the sort of saving that is going to revolutionise my finances though.

Managed to leave a burner on low overnight. Thankfully didn't burn the house down and it only rang up about 50p of gas. I wish they hissed at low, but my hob is completely silent at the lowest setting.

thankfully I'm not in a Berkeley block of flats for our shared boiler.

the Ofgem max unit pricing for domestic electricity & gas doesn't apply to communal heating systems which is bad enough, but Berkely are claiming they can apply rate increases retrospectively and that the unfair contract terms protection in the Consumer Rights Act 2015 doesn't prevent this.
what absolute thieving cunts.

Wondering if this increase is caused by higher demand due to electric car charging

I used to have economy 7 and did take advantage of the timings for doing laundry. Electricity including heating cost me about £45 / month when I had a fixed deal with edf.

My January monthly electricity and gas bill just arrived. £375 [last year was £421]
I see gas is 25% cheaper this year and electricity 17% cheaper (per unit).
There was also the £67 monthly credit last year - but not this year.
You practically need a tax accountant to understand these things.

Our solar with battery system was installed this week. I cannot tell you how satisfying it is to watch the app. Octopus has a bit where they tell you how much your DD should be and after one whole day on solar that amount has dropped by 4 quid. I think for now we have to keep heating water and doing laundry overnight and I daresay I will stop reading the meter every morning at some point.

Not sure how these would work with battery (particularly in winter) but I've got a controller that heats the hot water from any excess power so have got free(ish) hot water. Also because it's so damp in Cornwall I've got a dehumidifier that I'll leave running in the day so should also be free(ish). Ish because I'm hoping to avoid pushing any electricity back into the grid so won't be earning 3p/unit.

You can get 15p per unit with Octopus. I've a referral code too, worth £50.00. Just saying...
