It's not the number of chords in itself that's the problem, but chances are, if there are 38 different chords that some of them will be total fuckers in terms of finger stretching badness for a beginnerin my habitual style of trying to run before i can walk i got me an elliott smith tab book. 38 different chords in one song?

Sorry but even if you hate what they do, they are very good at it. In the recent documentary the drummer from Smashing Pumpkins said if you can play any of their stuff, you'll manage most of whats required of you in a band.
