Moscow/Kiev=>Baku Train

I have been near there. But this was 60 years after any kind of conflict took place.
Apparently there are still fields full of smashed hardware from the battles. And of course basic features of the landscape won't have gone away, the riverfronts, the Mamayev hill etc

I've long fancied a visit, but guided tours are about £2.5k, so I wondered how one might do a 'Stalingrad battlefield tour' on the cheap

If you arrived at Moscow's northern airport and drive into the city you can still see the concrete blocks and steel tank obstacles the Soviet Government placed on the outskirts of the city, tarted up as memorials. There's even a tractor sitting by the road, painted red, as a memorial to the agricultural war effort by those in the Ryazan region during the war.

The area around the Kurgan you mentioned was transformed after the war. After all, it was a focal point of ferocious fighting. And you must know of The Motherland Calls, which sits atop the Kurgan? If you want to say the old Tatar burial mound is a basic feature of the city's landscape, then fair enough, but there won't be any bullet holes unless you go to a preserved mill.

If you wanted to do a 'tour,' then I bet you could do it for less than what you mentioned independently of what a travel company can offer. Despite threats from Islamists to 'liberate' all of southern Russia, I'm not aware of the ongoing insurgency spreading deeply into the Volga region either. Passenger trains have been known to explode from time to time in the North Caucasus, mind. The tour you've got in mind, though, would include going to Kursk and the Prokhorovka fields?
