Mobile phones in the air filming concerts

Nick Cave telling his audience they have 30 seconds to film him, and then they have to put their fucking phones away. All filmed on good quality film and available for all. And there’s a huge fucking screen behind the band so everyone in the hall can see everything.
Meanwhile, a couple of dicks in the audience continue filming him saying “that’s it”.

I saw June Tabor and Oysterband earlier in the month and they were really hot on enforcing this at the venue - ushers were telling people off.

the band themselves have been very firm on this - bit of a hot topic here. Someone in the comments said one band allowed people to take their pics and videos for their final song only.

Official photographers who take snaps for publication are permitted to be in the pit for the first couple of songs (usually 2, sometimes 3) and that’s it. No more photos.

The band find it distracting, and it forces them to be self aware when they’re trying to build and invoke and inhabit their onstage persona.

Photographers don’t much like it and spend time during the rest of the set thinking “Damn! That would have been a great shot!” but they understand it and respect it and don’t try to subvert it.

The RnR experience is a communal one, built not only by the band and crew, but also by the audience. If the audience are distracted or distanced by their cameras, they’re not doing their job.

Bands want and need good audiences so they can turn in good performances. Then everyone goes away with strong deep vital memories. The camera can never replace that visceral experience of being there. Even good photos are only that : good photos.

Anyone who’s been to the really big show that’s being filmed for some reason? Yunno, with the camera people on the actual stage, and big boom things sweeping overhead. That’s really distracting, right? And it puts you firmly outside the experience of watching the band. Having cameras pointing at them feels like that for the band.

Looking out and not seeing faces turned towards them, the stage lights catching the whites of their eyes, but instead little shiny slabs and eyes averted to look at the screens instead of towards them.

Phones held aloft at gigs isn’t just shit for people standing directly behind the person doing it, it’s shit in a much broader way and has negative effects on loads of different aspects of the show.

I was at the Roundhouse to see Tricky. The constant bloody chatter was annoying, especially the people who were saying “Where’s that Top Bird singer then? I hope he does that Portishead track.”

Bloke in front of me kept putting his phone up to film. And you know how Tricky prefers to perform in the gloom, right? So this bloke’s phone was really bright and it was ruining my view and experience. And not only me, there was fair mutterings around me. He did it three times and when he put his phone down again I asked him “if you’re going to film, could you maybe turn down the brightness of the screen?” and this fucker said “Shut up I’m not doing anything wrong”. I said “Well, you’re annoying people around you” and he came back with “You’re annoying!” So I moved. And so did several other people. He had a little Billy No Mates zone at his back for a while before others moved into it.

It worked out for me cos I finally found a spot where I wasn’t surrounded by people saying shit like “Why is it so dark?” and “I don’t recognise this one is it new?” and “Is he actually going to sing? Is he even on stage?” and “It’s not very loud is it”. Instead it was people who were quiet and listening.

And we all lived happily ever after.

Yes there does seem to be much more chatter going on during gigs.

I'd be all for venues hiring catapult experts to pelt persistent offenders.

I agree with the sentiment in general, but that video is apparently filmed in Kraków so quite possible that said dicks in the audience might not speak English or understand exactly what he's saying. I've certainly cheered along with non-English artists without having a clue what they were on about.

Gig tonight. Aussie pink Floyd.

Tosspots in front of me must have filmed the entire gig. Is it that hard to just enjoy the music and keep phone in pocket? No one cares about your shitty videos that will never be watched again

Plus knobheads behind me talking, and bloke next to me checking Facebook!

Tomorrow I am at a gig where the band ask for no phones and enforce it if people take phones out. And it’s largely respected
