OK, usually I just do pretty manic mixes, but I do also sometimes enjoy mellower stuff, so I thought fuck it, let's make a downtempo mix. And here it it!

Why did I call it a short window to chill? Well, basically because I actually had a very short window to make this mix. I recorded it off the cuff in thirty minutes the night before our summer vacation. It's not perfect, but it's pretty cool! These tunes are quality.

(Yes, I know most of these are dnb b-sides, but that's what I have)

For my final mix of 2023, here's a special present from me to you - my tribute to my favorite artist of the last decade ... Om Unit! I recorded this mix in literally our last night in our old flat in Wilmersdorf before we moved out after ten years - it seemed like a nice bit of synchronicity to record this specific tribute as a final farewell to our home of so many years.

Om Unit (aka Jim Coles to his mom) has been probably my favorite electronic music producer of the last ten years I love how he integrates his distinctively synth-heavy, melodic, bass-forward sound into all kinds of musical frameworks. He's done everything from 110 bpm (and slower) dub / downtempo beats to 140 bpm breaks and dubstep and then all the way up to 160 bpm footwork and 170 bpm jungle and drum n' bass. What's really cool about his work is that even though he works at different tempos and in quote-unquote different genres, his music always sounds like him. In this day and age, it's hard to find artists with a clear and distinctive sound, and he really has that. I love that he doesn't compromise his musical vision, that he bends the genres to his sound, instead of the other way around.

This mix is focused more on his faster stuff, and I've tried hard to pay appropriate homage ... enjoy!

I'm excited to announce a new mix series for 2024 called There & Back! Conceptually, these mixes are designed to be listened to on my commute, so they will clock in at about 1 hour, but more importantly than that it's just an excuse to do some crate-digging! Each month I will be digging in the crates, and this month (I'm getting it in just on the line lol) I kick things off with a selection of premium drum n' bass rollers from 1994 to 1996, mashing together everything from Bukem-esque atmospheric tracks, Bristol minimalism, funky rare groove samplers, early jump-up, and ragga tunes with punishing bass. It's a fun selection!

Just about to listen to this for the third time in a row, a rarity for someone like me who's absolutely riddled with ADHD - a fine mix of dubby techno - one for the headphones. Getting well into listening properly with quality headphones and really paying attention

Also worked today under cloudy skies 👍🏼

I broke new ground and played it on my phone, Bluetoothed to a little speaker I found in a drawer. This might improve my cycle commutes from now on, but will probably kill my data streaming an hour a day.

This is why I always download streamed music and store it offline.
