Misogynist barbarians in Alabama impose forced pregnancy law

People who think these sort of assaults on women's bodily liberty and integrity are just some far away thing happening in the US are wrong. Abortion was almost totally prohibited in Northern Ireland until 2019 (including in cases of rape and incest). The European Court of Human Rights has consistently declined to find a right to an abortion, instead affording states a 'wide margin of appreciation' on the issue (this is basically the same as the US Supreme Court saying it's up to US States to decide). In 2020 judges in Poland's top court - largely appointed by the rightwing nationalist government - struck down a law permitting abortions in a narrow range of circumstances - in effect prohibiting virtually all abortions in the process. The Orban regime in Hungary have been pushing an anti-abortion agenda for many years now, and may now feel emboldened by developments in the US and Poland.

I'm quite confident that - in the short term at least - the European Court will start applying stricter standards in its assessment of Member States about their abortion laws - I predict Poland's approach will be found unlawful. In the longer run I'm worried however about whether the Court will survive the current rightwing populist rebellion against rights. Russia is already out and the Johnson regime is in the process of ripping up the Human Rights Act and some senior government officials are threatening to leave the Convention altogether. The Putin Model and the Johnson Model could well encourage other rightwing nationalists wanting to trash human rights, and especially the rights of women, minorities and the poor.
Quite. Anyone saying “it won’t happen here” really isn’t paying attention.

Brexit was never going to happen. Trump was never going to get elected. Nobody would be daft enough to let Johnson be PM. We’d never see a ground war with the possibility of it going nuclear in Europe again.

What has happened is a huge boost to people who want this worldwide. They are going to use it in every way possible.

The N.I. situation is shite. I had several friends who were nigh on traumatised by having to travel to London for an abortion. It’s not like there was an easy anonymous way to do it either as it was expensive - so you would get the early flight to London, have the procedure, rest up in a hotel and back the next day. If you were a young woman travelling alone on the early flight from Aldergrove, everyone knew why you were there. One friend said she could feel the disapproval 😠

Is anyone saying it won't happen here? But it's not helpful to merge everything either so that everything becomes the same. NI is not representative of the UK is it? The NI situation is not new, it's very old. It's not the same as England.

It's also important to note that it might be a huge boost to activism world wide, my eldest and her friend and his mum are going on a protest today (I'd go myself but I already arranged to speak to an old friend who left the US 2 years ago due to the politics).

I don’t think she meant to say that not even freudianly, as it makes absolutely no sense. Those ‘great replacement’ people who worry about too many brown & black babies being born are not going to find this ruling helps ease their demographic predicament are they.

voter apathy will be the biggest factor in the next election

hopefully this leads to action against what happened on friday

but it not like amercia is now burning after this decission

absolutely terrifying shit here, people have done a study trying to get at what this will practically mean just in year one, the numbers of women forced to carry unwanted foetuses because they cant travel to access care.

Horrific.
I reckon the Mormon woman I quoted upthread was onto something when she was focusing not on sex, not on pregnancy, but on irresponsible ejaculation. Using a condom or even pull-out for a few moments' slightly reduced pleasure can avoid a lifetime's misery for someone else. Why isn't this even a message?

hey as someone from ireland i would like to thank whomever thought up the idea of the pull out method

without it there would not be so bloody many of us :D

Yeah, it's not brilliant but it's better than doing nothing at all.

how stupid some of the beliefs of the Great Replacement are

Mary Miller is a terrible person who probably has strong white supremacist sympathies, but I think I'm willing to accept her campaign's explanation that she's not very good at reading.

Miller’s spokesman, Isaiah Wartman, told the Associated Press that the Illinois Republican misread her prepared speech and was supposed to declare the divisive court ruling a victory for the “right to life.”
