Mail surmises what would have happened if Thatcher hadn't won in 79

Tory leader after that? Pick your deadbeat...

If the political ground had remained on the left, probably a one-nationer like Clarke.

A lot of recent privatisations (post office opening up etc.) have been driven from European policy (just as much corporate shills as our own government). In such a fantasy scenario, maybe the challenge to the EU would have come from the left, not the right?

The LP manifesto of 1983 contained a promise to withdraw from the then-EEC, unless my memory's gone kaput. So it's not all that fantastical. I can't remember on what grounds the LP proposed to pull out, but wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't a million miles from your suggestion.

Mind you, the LP manifesto of 1983 might as well have been written on Snoopy notepaper.

Speak for yourself, if Benn had been PM private property would be a historical concept by now :D
This Sikh has never forgiven Benn for the 1967 MOA the marine offences act he passed when he was postmaster general which did away with all the pirate radio ships out in the thames estury like radio Caroline, radio London etc Thus leading to the dire BBC creating the dire radio one

It was too early for Clarke; in reality, he didn't join the Cabinet until 1985. More likely Ian Gilmour or perhaps Heseltine.

It was glorious for most of the 70's. The !976 British summer was a belter, but I was in Spain at the time, with the pound on a par with the peseta, so cost a fortune, but what the hell. We just put in for a larger pay-rise and got it just like that. We earned the equivalent of a weeks full wages in bonus alone on top of the basic wage for some time. Office workers were livid. Sectionalism not good long-term it should be said.
