I have some very wealthy clients. That is in the super cool, lakeside home of a very nice couple from Boston. Nice exposure in Boston magazine. Of all the art they have on their walls, I was the only artist to get a personal mention :)

Met a bunch of very nice guys from Normandy last night. They had spotted a country park on the edge of the city, so we all went camping there. Beautiful place alongside the river. Loads of ponds full of frogs. Hey! They were French - I had to ask at least :D

Frogs legs fried in olive oil with garlic to be served with a very herby salad. Loads, and loads of herbs including lemon mint for putting in my lager and lemon slush mix summer drink.

Oh, happy days. When will it all start going wrong?

Portugal has been hit severely by forest fires this year. Around 100 people dead already. I am only cooking with a gas camping stove in a city environment. I would never use a live fire here. Not even on the beach, or river banks.

Some people seem to be assuming I am stupid, so I felt obliged to mention this. Fires are roaring very close to Coimbra right now. We camped in a country park within the city, by a river. Very little risk there.

pretty much immediately apparently

I am taking no risks on that front. There are many eucalyptus trees amongst the forests here. In Galicia, I know they are actually trying to control the spread of eucalyptus. Here they are everywhere, and give off flamable vapours in dry, hot conditions. Literally going up in flames like giant match sticks. You do need to be very aware of the risks.

They are more profitable than cork or carob .

yeh this article shows you are right to be worried: http://www.politico.eu/article/portugal-fire-eucalyptus-killer-forest/

e2a: there's a graph in there that shows portugal has more fires each year than greece, italy, france or spain despite being much smaller than france or spain. or italy

The eucalyptus trees have been a massive problem for over 30 years in Portugal due to, as The39thStep says, their profitability. The campaign against them has gone on for decades, but money speaks louder than words.

hasn't rained here since April and unlikely to until November , so it's quite dry. You get fires started through broken bottles magnifying the sun, fags thrown out of cars or whilst walking, electric power tools, chainsaws, strimmers and arsonists ( some for insurance and others just fruit the loops). I think 3/4 of the fireservice are volunteers as well.

Frogs legs? Did you catch frogs and cook them?
