Let's talk about China

And I can't agree that China is committed to supporting tyranny abroad as a matter of principle. I think their foreign policy operates strictly on realpolitik.
It is realpolitik - they don't want governments / elites with whom they've fostered a cosy relationship to lose power after an election, aside from anything else.

Well the ones I know describe themselves as "Chinese." Admittedly they are not "here" as you call it.

Anyway, the point is that they're moving because of economic imperialism, not cultural imperialism.

The economic imperialism of being forced to learn Chinese, praise Chinese policy, praise Xi, give up their home customs and laws and give up what press freedoms they have.

I'll be sure to enlighten them that China isn't committing cultural imperialism and they only moved here for pragmatic economic reasons. I'm sure they will be delighted to hear this.

Cantonese language and culture in Hong Kong and southern China has been under threat for a long time

In southern China, the Guangdong National Language Regulations were enacted to restrict the use of Cantonese in the media. When I was last in China, there were banners saying “Be civilized, speak Putonghua (Mandarin)” everywhere, including at the airport.

In Hong Kong, a 2008 curriculum document stated that using Putonghua to teach Chinese in schools is the long-term goal. Many people see that as a threat of cultural genocide. The Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Leung Chun-ying, took the oath of office in Putonghua, unlike the former Chief Executives, who did it in Cantonese. Many people think that his language choice was a “kowtow” to Beijing.

According to an unofficial survey, 72 per cent of primary schools in Hong Kong use Putonghua as the medium of instruction in Chinese language classes. That’s worrying. For a lot of abstract concepts like political science or philosophy, they may only know how to think in Mandarin, and not be able to express themselves very well in Cantonese.

I'm not worried about fascism in the USA, I'll leave that to the Never Trump loonies.

I'm worried about the neo-cons, who control the senile Biden's government. They are committed to the PNAC, which involves the rapid destruction of several nations. Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Sudan, Somalia and Yemen have already been destroyed. Syria and Iran are next. The biggest problem the Americans face is Putin, who prevented them from overthrowing Assad, so now they have to get rid of Putin too. In short the PNAC is a recipe for WW3, and the USA is totally committed to it. If you're not worried about an out-of-control USA taking the rest of the world down with it, you certainly ought to be.
You need to ease up on your love for Trump. You may see those of us who oppose his sickening virus of would be fascism as loonies, but the concerns are genuine.

Have you been paying attention to what is happening in your country? Do you really think that a spell in the abyss is the best remedy for MAGA?

You have claimed that Biden is senile on many occasions and that he's responsible for Russia invading Ukraine.

Do you really believe he's pushing the outdated PNAC agenda, or are you just desperate for another Trump term?

America’s undying empire: why the decline of US power has been greatly exaggerated
Thu 30 Nov 2023
Much of the predicted systemic change consists of the emergence of Sino-American competition. But “multipolarity” is a poor description for this development. The strategic balance so far remains hugely in favour of the US.
China does not militarily threaten the US. Chinese naval power is routinely exaggerated; its navy is not predicted to rival the US Pacific fleet for another generation, and it still lacks “quiet” nuclear-powered submarines that resist sonar detection. It is not clear that China is capable of mounting an invasion even of Taiwan, and there are good reasons to think China’s leadership knows this.
For its part, China has not even made a serious effort to escape the dominance of the dollar in its trade with the rest of the world. It is the US that asserts a policy of isolation and punishment of China, not vice versa. So long as the US is maintaining a “defense perimeter” in the East and South China Seas that extends to a few kilometres from mainland China, it is not dealing with a peer, it is threatening a recalcitrant.

Meloni: Italy can improve trade with China after Belt and Road departure
December 7, 2023
Italy in 2019 became the first and so far only major Western nation to join the trade and investment programme, ignoring warnings from the United States that it might allow China to take control of sensitive technologies and vital infrastructure.
However, when Meloni took office last year, she said she wanted to withdraw from the deal, which was championed by President Xi Jinping.
The 2019 accord expires in March 2024 and an Italian government source said on Wednesday that Rome had sent Beijing a letter "in recent days" informing China that it would not be renewing.

China Invading Taiwan in 2027. Multiple articles saying China is preparing its armed forces to invade Taiwan in 2027. Scary. Hopefully won’t start World War 3.

Is "multiple articles" the new "it was revealed to me in a dream"? While I don't doubt that the CPC has designs on Taiwan, giving out specific dates like this without sharing your sources is just pointless.

The sinicisation of mosques continues. Satellite imagery shows at least 1,714 buildings have been altered, stripped or destroyed. The government says the changes are to modernise the mosques and “harmonise” them with Chinese culture. Islamic features like domes and minarets have been replaced with Chinese styles. Islamic decorative motifs outside mosques are being replaced with security cameras.

Human Rights Watch report (22 Nov) here:

The FT has a long article (Nov 27) heavily illustrated with before and after images and video, which seems to prevent archive.ph from rendering its usual service, but the original is here (paywalled, so the link won't show the heading):

How China is Tearing Down Islam

Some American companies are pulling their stuff out of China now.

Onshoring I think it is called.

Just in case it seems.

And yet they have a co-operation agreement with Iran. So China clearly only has a problem with internal Muslims and Iran are clearly fine with the destruction of Mosques. The mind boggles.
