Let's see your broadband speed (2018-2020 edition)

Plusnet fibre. Compared to what I've been used to over the last few years (rural Wales isn't really at the top of anyone's priority list), this is a revelation - nearly TEN Mb/s upstream!

Ping: 13ms
Down: 34Mbps
Up: 9.25Mbps

I am willing to bet mine is the slowest here.

Uploading stuff takes ages, but on the download side I can usually watch live TV when I want to.

It is a basic BT broadband package in the sticks.

I'm happy to report that the Huawei B-535 4G router, combined with an unlimited data 4G/LTE EE Sim is giving me a much improved and very satisfactory 148Mbps down, and 56mpbs up. The speed increase is definitely noticable over my old 100mbps Virgin connection and even better I'm able to plug it in anywhere in the house without having to tether it to a cable running in.

Even better it's markedly cheaper than Virgin coming in at only over £25.20 a month - that's the £35/pm unlimited data texts/calls plan with 10% extra line discount and 20% student code discount (easily obtained on ebay ;))

If you get a good 4G signal in your home, and can find an unlimited data package at a competitive price, then I highly reccomend getting on of these routers - which can be got for as little as £29 (see here and here for how to do it - I can vouch that it works), and away you go.

Extra benefits include being able to take it with you anywhere in Europe and even further depending on your bundled benefits. Plus unlimited calls and texts if you wanted to stick the sim in a phone.

One of the 1st BT Infinity customers until I realised Zen internet was cheaper. Always wanted to go to Zen.

I still prefer a wired connection.

I just got my Virgin modem replaced because it wasn't liking the "improved" infrastructure and was dropping out - still not getting the promised 100MBPS - not that I care.
If Virgin can't give me a massive cut in price, I'll be switching in a month or two ...
Not sure what happened at 02.30 this morning ....

when i first got fibre installed (2012) my speed was around 76mb/s but as its popularity has grown it's now constantly high 50s/60.

Not bad for peak time, will usually be 220Mbps outside peak times.

Upload speed pisses me off on Virgin.

Didn't do it last year, but not much change since 2018, other than VM increasing the upload limit. (and the price by £5 a month)

Should be interesting next year when I've moved house (feel like I've been saying that forever, still haven't exchanged contracts!!!)

I will be leaving Virgin soon as I'm paying far too much. Not because even with a brand new modem that doesn't crash on a daily basis, I still don't get the promised 100Mbps they say I have...
Since I have never played a computer game in my life, I doubt I've ever managed to sustain a download speed of 15Mbps - even for a millisecond.

Internet activated today. Can't get VM, so now on BT Fibre 2, which is Fibre to the cabinet.

It seems pretty stable so far, although only discovered today the Home Hub 2 can't be put into any kind of modem mode (I thought everyone allowed this, been stuck in the VM bubble for way too long)

Managed to find some guides and get my ASUS router working via setting it up in a DMZ in the Home Hub. Looks like I need to get hold of an Openreach modem to do it properly, so that's next, but you can only get them second hand it seems if your broadband supplier doesn't give you one and most vendors don't sell them to the public. Plus it looks like I need a specific Huawei one to match the equipment in the cab. Yay.

Anyway, above is what £45 a month got me, below is what £32 a month gets me.
