Let's see your broadband speed (2018-2020 edition)

plusnet over ethernet

but Im getting half that over the wifi 23mbps and 4.5mbps
is that normal?
Yes with a speedtest you're measuring the performance of everything between you and the test server so the result you get is the performance of the slowest bit (usually the wire tween you and the exchange)
Ethernet cables are capable of up to at least 1Gbps over the cable between the computer and the router but wifi runs at a fraction of that speed so you're really measuring the performance of your wifi.

Countryside WiFi. Fed through a power line connection to the back of the house!

TV streaming works fine though

So the wifi at work is basically shitter than my home wifi that runs off a fucking sim card :hmm:

4G wifi (no phone lines for proper internet)

Shirley that upload speed's not right :D
It's likely a 1gbps synchronous (the upload and download streams are the same speed) leased line. If it's at eg. a university with many people downloading and not much uploading going on, that would explain the result.

Are you suggesting that Pickman's model is clever enough to be posting from a university :hmm: They need to check their security ;)

Not bad considering I've got two 128k streams, and a bitcoin node running while the speed test is. I pay £30 a month (negotiated) for 100meg, basic tv, and landline btw.

Fucking hell, you've done well..... I've got 100, with an upgraded tv package and landline for £50

I'm glad you think so! I was a bit disappointed and was hoping for better :D

Also I was hoping I avoided the £3 per month increase but it's just been added so I'm now paying £33 a month

I keep shopping around, but I just can't bear the thought of paying £20 for a phoneline and £30 for 17mb broadband, when I get 70 mb fibre normally at worst.

i did used to be 72mb d/l, but because i regularly refuse the BT TV & sports packages, that has, i think, made them reduce my d/l speeds a bit

Not wishing to derail the thread much but has anyone noticed how much data SpeedTest uses?

Over half a gigabyte to test my speed wtf!

If you download speed is 440 mbps. How long do you want to to test your speed for?

Is that 5g and if so where roughly?

I don't understand the question. It's just a standard test to run a check on speed, the length of time it takes is seconds, and not something I can alter anyway. The fact it uses half a gig though seems ludicrous.

It's not 5G, it's 4G. I'm thinking of sacking off Virgin so just running some speedtests on my EE mobile. I have a 4G router already ready to go. In theory I could get a 5G router, but it's around £360 and I'm not convinced I need such speeds right now as the 4G seems adequate enough.

I’m never that trustworthy of speedtest.net but 440mbps is in excess of 4g speeds I believe.

My point on the speed is that 440 mbps is already a lot of data per second, the exact maths escapes me, so that it wouldn’t need to run for long for long to use up the data.

It seems good I agree but it's definitely not 5G, I'm using an iPhone 11, and that doesn't have the capability.

I've been running some speedtests to compare the speeds between Virgin Broadband, Vodafone, EE and Three. EE by far coming out on top. I'll just be mindful of doing this too often knowing how much actual data usage it comsumes on mobile.

I’d try a different tester. As I believe the speed exceeds real world capacity for 4g.

iPhone 11 has Gigabit LTE/4G+/LTE-Advanced or whatever they call it.

I didn’t know about iPhone having a more advanced 4g

EE’s website sayshttps://ee.co.uk/articles/how-double-speed-helps-your-digital-life

Double speed 4g which isn’t limited to iphone 11 is around 60mbps. Couldn’t see any references to anything higher.

They've been rolling out 4G+ for a while now.

That article claims theoretical max speeds are 330mbps there but it can deliver over 1gbps.

The network operators are constantly upgrading their networks (at least in big cities where it's easier to do).

EDIT: Just remembered my last phone (S5+) had LTE-A and was the world's fastest phone (in terms of cellular networks) at time of release (in 2014 ).

May be of interest B.I.G

This was the test I ran using that same EE SIM in my Huawei B-535232 Router with has upto 300Mbps DL and 100Mbps UL speed limit.

In case anyone's interested. Three are doing a pretty good deal on being able to get one of these pretty cheap if you can be arsed with the rigmarole of taking up a 1 month deal and then cancelling it straight away (which is what I did). So you basically get a router which sells for £114 on Amazon, for £29.

Anyway, Three are terrible at my place, so I just did it to get the router in the event that I get rid of Virgin and go with a 4G solution via EE. The unliited data plan is £35/month. And when you add a 20% discount code (easily obtained on eBay) that works out to £28/month for virtually double the speed I was getting on Virgin, and the ability to move the router around the house and take it anywhere else I want too (not to mention unlimited phone calls and texts if I stick it in a phone)
