Blimey, there's some impressive speeds, especially on Virgin cable, not sure why my Virgin speeds are so much lower, not that it causes any problems.

Either you're on the 50Mbps package, in which case for the time of day, those speeds are about right (for a wired connection) or there's a problem. Wifi will never get the full speed, then it depends on where you are in comparison of the wifi access point, whats next to the access point, what wifi tech it's using (2G or 5G) the channel it's using, and any other interference.

Whack a device into the router over an Ethernet cable and you'll get a true representation of the speed you have eliminating wifi issues.

Cheers for that.

I seem to be on their 'SuperFibre 70' package, but I am posting on the laptop, with a 2G wireless connection, about 6 foot from the router, so I guess if I could be arsed to plug into the router it would be better.

My Freesat box is directly plugged into the router for streaming catch-up TV, and that works without any problems, so I don't really need any higher speed than that TBH.

ETA: I decided to re-run the test, plugged into the router, download speed has increased a lot, but upload speed has dropped a little. :hmm:

hmm. £44.10 gets me internet and a landline I don't use, no TV.

VM do Internet only packages (assuming you're in a fibre area and not ADSL) they tend to be more expensive though than bundling in, but it depends on what's important to you I guess. If you want to pay the same price and have much faster internet, then give them a call.

There's not much price difference between the slower internet only packages and the one I'm on now, which when I moved in was 30Mbps and has gradually been increased for free* to to 200Mbps over the 7 years I've been here.

* It usually ends up going up in price between £1-£2 every year, but since I last moaned that they were charging me more than what new customers pay, I've generally ended up still paying a couple quid less for the same package as what new customers pay, and as the price differences are only a few quid here and there, I haven't been arsed to downgrade/complain.

I don't really need 200Mbps if I'm honest but downgrading to save less than £5 a month seemed counter productive, and I would probably end up missing it when it came down to downloading huge files every now and then, so I've just kept it. Plus dealing with VM Customer service can sometimes be unnecessarily stressful, so any excuse to not have to deal with them and fuck it up!

Since I'm paying for 100Mbps perhaps I should ring them up and bollock them
