Kensington Olympia station in the 80s.

Finally?

They have been saying it was coming soon since about 2001.

Anyway isn't it just for the posh people in those fancy flats?

There is nothing else round there.

Even if it is, its paid for by the developer so whats the harm (aside from delays to people already on board) - exactly the right principle that developers should pay for transport improvements near their developments so that new residents aren't locked in to car dependency

No, this is why it took years.

The developers were wrangling with TFL & Hammersmith & Fulham council over who should pay for it.

In the end, the developers only paid a small percentage towards it, with the rest of us picking up the tab.

Basically - developers push for a station , promise the earth , and put in a couple of pennies "support" (section 106) - taxpayer in one form or other coughs up the capital and the ongoing revenue /staff costs.

Not to say that any new station is a bad thing of course......

yes, but while Imperial Wharf might be the closest station to us as the crow flies, because there is no footbridge on Battersea Rly bridge we can't get across the river. IMO the S106 money should have been spent on a footbridge.

the mrs worked at earls court for a while - IIRC the EC car park was the motorail car park as well - im pretty sure the location of this was critical for the old EC car shows of years ago, before they went elsewhere

Good point re footbridge - has any one canvassed for this with Local authority , TFL, any other outfit you can think of etc.

Sounds like a great idea - that bridge is pretty solid and has been re-engineered to my knowledge.

Sad that there is only one mainline train service (Southern) stopping at Kensington Olympia these days which only does one route, Milton Keynes to East Croydon.

I remember only recently being able to get trains direct to Gatwick with Southern and Virgin, First Great western to Reading, Virgin to Manchester Piccadilly. We even used to see the Eurostar pass by. Alas, All gone now :(

(Are you sure First Great Western used to go there by the way??)

Yeah I saw that last year. It is interesting.

Come to think of it, it might have been Virgin running the train to Reading (Not FGW) that I got on. It went to the junction by Acton mainline and then joined the main GWR route down to reading. Dead convenient as the station is walking distance from my flat. Now I have to go to sodding Paddington instead to go to Reading by train.

Yeah I think it would have been when Virgin were running the Crosscountry franchise (which used to run a few trains into Paddington too, but not any more).

more on olympia station here - http://www.subbrit.org.uk/sb-sites/stations/k/kensington_olympia/index2.shtml

the district line service (olympia - earls court - high street kensington) is now an all day thing - it used only to be when there was a big exhibition on.

it was an all day thing when i lived round the corner from there in 1992

ive even drunkenly crossed the track, the only live tube line ive ever crossed whilst being screamed at by trainspotters to stop or id die

the first eurostar trains went through there

Used to travel between there and East Croydon(?) on the old Cross Country InterCity services using a Travelcard just for the fun of it. It still is a bit of a cencept to get your head round: A service via London that services passengers not going to London.

Its sad how under serviced the whole station is now.

Even when I moved here there were plenty of destinations you could travel in North or South and the Eurostar every evening passing through. Now, hardly anything.

IIRC, it wasn't the operators that wanted to kill of the InterCity services but the bloody government.

reinvented itslef as a Motorail terminal in the 1960's , trains to Fishguard for Ireland and Scotland

Interesting! :) Wonder if there's any photos from that time?

I've been on a Eurostar that ended up getting diverted into it at silly o'clock in the morning.

Stupidly under utlised

A few more stations, say sheperds bush/white city and something on the south bank before clapham and it becomes viable for commuters - its part of the Metro/overground outer circle concept so its insane that they have so few stations on it - plus it enables thru trains from anywhere west and northwest of london down to the southcoast - cant see any real reason why it isn't used more

TBH is was a loss maker from day one, was once owned by the district railway pre all the 1920 shenanigans - at one point, pre WW1 I think you could have a got a direct train from Whitechapel to Clapham

There already is a new railway station at Shepherd's Bush and there is also a new station at Imperial Wharf (although this near the north bank of the Thames).

You'll be able to once again when the East London Line section of the London Overground opens, but it is still a few years off I think......... Phase II(III) or something?

For a proper step back in time, you should go to the waiting room of the ticket hall in Kensington Olympia - its like something from the seventies. Nobody ever uses it to actually wait for trains - still there's comfy seats, plastic plants, and proper toilets.

It's only a matter of time before they just make it into a ticket office and sell of the unused spare room :(

Newer footage

here are some of the 378s for the overground getting hauled thru Kensigton Olympia - ignore the little bit of Clapham Junction at the start

Used it a few months ago for a Travel fair. Used to use it when there was a tube strike on... I always used to think it looked a bit lonely (on the tube map)... as if no other stops wanted to be mates with it... :)
