Jungle

Been meaning to rip this JJ Frost on Kiss tape for time…

Although I was listening to Kool and Don most weekends, there was something about Kiss waking up to the sound that seemed to herald (to me at least) that 'big tings a gwarn'. Bear in mind that after hardcore had exploded mainstream in 92 and was regularly on Kiss rotation, the station virtually ignored the scene again as it then retreated back underground.

It was late 92 through to early 94 where hardcore-jungle was bubbling away at its most creative - but this was also the time where if there wasn't a pirate in the vicinity, Kiss was pretty much the only other hope for playing the music (Radio 1 wouldn't get there until a whole year later in summer 95!).

Jumping Jack Frost - Kiss 100 - April 94 (160MB)

Tracklist:
Helicopter Tune - Deep Blue
Some Justice '94 - Urban Shakedown
High Time (Nookie Remix) - DJ Trax
T-N-T - Hardware
ad break
Essence - Blame & Justice
The Vocal Tune - Peshay
It's A Jazz Thing - Roni Size & DJ Die
Burial - Leviticus
Dangerous - DJ Ron
ad break

Project 1 Remix - Tango
Incredible - M-Beat feat General Levy
Jah Sunshine - X Project
Banana Boat Man - Conquering Lion
ad break
Living For The Future - Omni Trio
The Saint - Wax Doctor
ad break
Calculus Beats - Dillinja
Jungle Love - Flynn & Flora

Seem to recall it being an unusually warm April night when listening/recording this and the tunes really blew me away - especially Burial and Nookie's remix of High Time. The tape has (to me anyway) still a bit of a hazy evening sound to it :D Frost even plays Incredible - that being before the whole 'jungle committee' thing kicked off!

one for the historians here and in the spirit of xmas truces:

Back in 1994, live on the mic at a Roast session, MC 5ive 0 infamously criticised General Levy, feeling that Levy was selling out jungle and going around saying he ran it. You can hear 5ive 0's attack here:

Levy had just been on ToTP - Incredible got to number 8 and was probably the first 'jungle' tune to chart - Totp does make things look a bit sell out, and then on top of that Levy gave an interview that seemed to say the Levy ran jungle...you can kind of see why 5ive 0 was wound up.

But what is less well known is that in January 2011 Levy was a guest on Maddness's Kool FM show and 5ive 0 called in live on air and apologised for what he said. This video has the audio from that call. Levy accepted his apology.
Peace Love & Unity prevails in the jungle!

Uploaded this last night - breaking news from 3 years ago!
