I notice that BBC Radio 4 omitted this information, which is quoted in The Guardian:
"He later joined the French Foreign Legion’s parachute regiment and took part in the war in Indochina and in the Algerian war of independence, during which he was accused of torturing detainees.

In 1962, Le Pen told the newspaper Combat: “I’ve nothing to hide. We tortured because it had to be done.”"

Thanks for this. I don't know why, but this passed me by.
I protested against Le Pen outsided Charing Cross Hotel in London in 1992, when he was due to meet some Conservative MPs. If I recall correctly, the MPs decided not to meet him.
