Japan! Tokyo!

Oof I forgot about people. It was crowded enough on cold wet day in December. I would not like to be there on a hot summers day in tourist season.

e.g check this video out, it will give you an idea of how quickly and how congested an iconic site can get. It's also pretty on rails. You're not wondering off to interesting little bits, because you can't. Even for somewhere like ginkakuji it's probably worth exploiting the jet lag if you wake up early and getting there when it's quieter.

e2a: that video also says Fushimi inari is open 24 hours, didn't know that - a night walk might be cool, especially for views over the city.

Just be aware there are boars at night

Never going back in August, Tokyo was a nightmare
This is the annoying thing about having school-age children. In any event Covid meant that we lost our chance to go at Easter in a non-exam year.
Indeed. I have mostly had about 10 years of this. We get less time if we go at Christmas (Which we did a couple of times) but at least you aren't constantly battling impossible heat. I've never really done the tourist stuff as I can't stand crowds. Daughter is now doing exams . . . but now the worry is that wife and daughter want to spend an extended period of time in Japan . . . you know, like living there. . . that's going to be a bit trixy for me in lot's of ways.

I’d like to try Christmas in Japan, I’m sure it’s as tacky as here but it’s at least tacky in a different way.

Osaka or Tokyo with some driving around Hokkaido

It's pretty non existent. Christmas Eve is a kind of valentines day thing, so there will be couples out in the evening. Christmas day is a normal day other than big queues outside KFC.

They have christmas based sales and promotions but that's about it.

As idaho says above. . .
Mostly everyone is gearing up to the new year which is a actual national holiday with almost everyone having a few days off.
Christmas day last year I was record shopping in Ochanomizu. It was Sunday and Christmas day, makes no difference, all trains and shops ran as normal just like every other day. Had some sushi and some fancy christmas based cup cakes type things.
Just avoid KFC.
I have to say that usually I spot mega queues for fried chicken and that this christmas I barely saw anything out of the ordinary.

On Stephen's Day, all the decorations come down and it's back to normal for a few days until just before New Year's. Everyone is on the move then, off to see their families. Tokyo station is heaving.

It’s always heaving: Chuo, Yamanote, and Shinkansen lines are there
Um yes. He means more than normal. Really heaving. I took the Shinkansen just before new year and it was actually ok (apart from the souvenir and bento shops). I'm sure a week later it would have been a different story. Trips to Shinjuku and Shibuya over the holiday period were horrendous.
I did go for a 25km run around central Tokyo on New Years day morning which was actually quite pleasant (though I did set off at 6am).

I’ll leave you lot to your pissing contest

I have, fortunately only once, commuted the 50 mins each way from Hiratsuka, Kanagawa, along the tokaido line to Tokyo station at peak times

Krteks comment was helpful

Some things don’t need to be said.

appeared to attempt to gleefully (but pointlessly) shoot it down

Almost 4X the traffic of Britain’s busiest station and yet it’s only Tokyo’s 8th biggest.

Just a pointless thing to say in the first place. Relatively speaking it’s always fucking heaving.

Have you been there at rush hour and on regular off peak times? There IS a BIG difference. Why are you comparing it's size to british stations? They span different areas of ground, have different lines running though them and a different set up that doesn't really make them easily comparable.

When it truly is 'heaving' it is a nightmare (well for me anyway) but at regular busy times it is still fairly easy to negotiate (at least in the underpasses). South Croydon station was busy this morning, but you can't say . . . "Yeah well Tokyo station is 300 times bigger and has 1000X more passengers on it's slowest day."

Yes it is helpful to know that in Japan the whole country begins one if its very limited national holiday after Christmas and they all collectively ram major stations like Tokyo and shinjuki to get away for the new year.

. . . besides, I was commenting on your oddly rude suggestion that we were having a 'pissing contest'. You say this is because people are shooting down other peoples comments (but actually you mean yours) . . which is weird because it's the very first thing you did and exactly what you are doing right here. . .

Was referring to the new year period where it's even busier.

Would not recommend first time visitors to Japan to be moving about the country around that particular time.

And I’m sure your comments here will be the first and last stop seekers of such information will find themselves
