Italy's ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo was killed in what appears to have been a kidnap attempt gone wrong.

The deal went down just by the DRC border with Uganda.

It will be interesting to see what the fall out is. Probably, it won't amount to much. But now that someone the outside world cares about has been killed (after decades of war and millions of deaths) maybe there will be some sort of traction in some sort of direction.

Too much money tied up in the place from foreign miners - there is no benefit for these groups to relinquish control and limit income whilst they are getting slabs of cash for permissions and protection services
