Is it wrong to eat animals that are clever?

Cool they may be, but delicious also.
Their day will come and then you'll be sorry.

Once I would have eaten anything, then there had to be certain amount of welfare in their bringing up and slaughter, now i'm concerned with farting cows and shiting salmon.

It's not easy being an omnivore.

But yes I would

Is it okay to eat animals that are stupid?

If so, it's theoretically OK to eat Guardian columnists who write stupid articles like the one which inspired this rather pointless thread, but I doubt they would taste very nice, so I'll pass

At least we're not factory-farming the things, at least not with much success - given the choice, I'd a thousand times rather be a wild octopus with some hope of escaping the net than a dairy cow.

Anyway isn't it that octopus isn't actually delicious but that rather it functions as effective vehicle for the deliciousness of whatever seasoning/sauce is applied to it?

We are totally fucked if the octopuses ever get the upper hand and seek revenge - the practice of eating live baby octopuses is not going to be an easy one to explain away.
tbh we're also fucked if aliens turn up as well before they get here they will have seen our auld tv series and movies which more often than not show aliens as evil vicious fuckers.

Taste is a construct
If you were being fed a steak made of your mum it would taste disgusting because of your associations.
But octopuses aren't anyone's mum. They're not human, so it's easy to see them as food. Especially cos they taste very nice.

That's a Korean/Japanese thing though isn't it?

The rest of the world shouldn't be held accountable for their animal scoffing weirdness.

They often are someones mum or dad
They're not human, and wether thats an issue or not depends wether you're specist or not.
Specism isnt socially accepted by the majority as being bad as , say, racism is, because other species dont have a voice and are very easily subjugated and oppressed.
And no, theyre not delicious. Animal flesh on its own is disgusting - particularly so when you become conscious of and care for the animal, as you might do if you were eating a loved pet or relative. The flavours come from added non-animal ingredients.

it's strange how much of the animal world finds animal flesh on its own enticing. i doubt whether e.g. lions, jackals, panthers, salmon etc etc etc would find much attractive about the taste if you added pepper or paprika to their food.

evolutionary survival of carnivores
our ancestors are herbivores with long intestines - primates

That's nonsense.

Raw, unadorned oysters straight from the shell are pretty tasty - I'll bring some along if we ever hold peace talks with the octopuses.

taste is a mental construct, it is not objective.
you have made assosciations from birth that make you think it tastes good
as i said, a forced diet of meat of your loved friends, family, pets and other animals you might care for would utterly change your perception of whats "tastes good"

similarly the smell of cooking flesh might trigger pleasurable feelings or it might disgust you, as it would probably do if i killed your dog and threw it on a fire
