"if i ran the local cinema...": dream double bills

g force said:
Not to be picky but the term "double bill" seems to have been streched into "themes"....

you noticed... ;)

however, cast your eyes back to the original post...

okay, here's the pitch - you run a local fleapit, you are in charge of the projector, while your mate's running the bar. ergo, lots of free booze, your choice of chewns in the lobby, and you only have to screen the movies you want to see!

so, what would your perfect double/triple/quad bills be, what seasons would you run, and what shenanigans would you keep rolling in the bar?

so :p ya cheeky bugger :D

Krs you might as well have done this on your computer at home on your own. i think you have prity much covered every film ever made!

but just incase this hasn't been said...

thundercats.jpg

how about a classic cartoon weekend. you could charge for a couple of hours and play things like Thundercats, He-man, the Ragy Dolls, Button moon, Podington Peas, Citties of Gold, Ulisees etc the lst goes on and on.

that would be quality.

Bloody hell Bristle, have you been holed up all weekend in a film library with a big bag of crystal meth?

You've reminded me of some great films though which I must check out again.

now that sounds like the start of a great movie!

i see... tom hanks, no, mel gibson - no! dammit...

sean penn! yesss! sean penn, on the run from cinephile hitmen led by john cusack and ally sheedy...

it'll be a massive hit!

let's get mcg to direct

<twats self with frying pan for even thinking it>

A comedy night featuring:

BLACKBALL - Liam Gallagher meets David Beckham and the result woops behind at bowls and shags Alice Evans on the way to meeting the Aussies.

BASKETBALL - The two guys who made South Park, invent their own game and go pro. They get alot of money and finally get to control the team and play their arch rivals in the final of the founders cup.

HOTSHOTS - A movies with so many references its hard to move. Mainly top gun. Funny as hell.

HOT SHOTS PART DEUX - The Sequel still funny as hell and mainly parady's Rambo and Casablanca. ( Yes I know an odd mix )

stop press

just rang showcase cinemas (nationwide locations)

it is possible (and not unusual) to rent screen rooms for a night

the rate is £3.75 per seat, their smallest auditoriums being about 200 seats

so that makes £750 for the venue hire, this includes projectionists, front of house, admin, etc.

then you have to rent the print - prices to be confirmed

i reckon you could have a viable night on a budget of £1000

sell 100 seats at a fiver and put the £500 shortfall down to artistic indulgence

in fact, i'd put 500 notes toward running a one off, anyone else want to contribute?

the cube microplex in bristol is a durn sight cheaper to hire, has great volunteer staff, and a bar stocked to the gunnels with crazy beers and absinthe!

don't forget it costs to get the films too!

in fact, while i remember, i'm going to email this page to the lubberly folk at the cube in case they might be persuaded to put on a few of the suggestions on here :)

i'd have State Of The Americas style night.

i'd show

Happiness

Blue Velvet

A Hal Hartley movie, not sure which one.

and then i'd show American Beauty.

and in this way i believe i could clearly demonstrate what a vile, hollow, pointless piece of shit the latter movie is.

:p

the cube have got back already...

hi, hire fee depends on what you want to do with the space. standard hire for sunday to wednesday is £150 + vat. which includes all staffing and
auditorium. hire on thursday to saturday is £250 + vat and these are more
because these are the only nights that we have a public entertainment
licence for performance. hire cost of a film depends on the film and what
format. we have a digital projector whech costs £45 + vat to use. like i
say though these are all standard, so the more info you can give us the
better.

so there's always the dvd option, using the digi projector, still not sure about the hire cost of proper movies on fillum

so, phone em up

cube should be able to tell you the cost of a proper screening of, say three films

commencing at 11 pm, running through to 6 am

remember the old Scala nights at Kings X, that sort of thing

no, i mean different films from different distributers in different prints and formats etc cost different amounts (i believe).

so it depends entirely on what film are being screened. but the principle is that the cube do rent the whole microplex out, that they can get hold of proper decent prints, and that it's pretty cost-effective :)

so, any takers in getting a film club-type thing together? in bristol, mind :D

another reply from the lovely folk at the cube microplex:

another option - regarding the u75 thread film lists - would be to make
the case for incorporating some of these as part of cube programming. i
reckon some of them would be great, and could just be part of general
public programme if you wanted... unless you particularly want to run
your own nights/ invited audience only?
dunno whether all-nighters are possible, so perhaps double bills more
feasible.
but generally, programming the cube is open to input - so you could just
suggest stuff.

so, is anyone up for a u75 film night there? renting it out, a ticketed event, maybe as a server fund benefit?

i know - a new thread! :D

ooh ooh, can we have a Chow Yun-Fat night?

Long Hu Feng Yun (City on Fire) - An undercover cop, played by Chow Yun-Fat, infiltrates a gang of thieves who plan to rob a jewelry store. The inspiration for Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs.

Lashou shentan (Hard Boiled) - Tequila is a "hard boiled" cop who loses his partner in a shoot-out with gun smugglers. In order to bring down the gun smugglers, Tequila must team up with an undercover cop named Tony, who goes undercover as a hired gun with a Hong Kong Triad, which is run by a vicious boss named Johnny Wong.

Du Shen (The God of Gamblers) - Do San a gambler with supernatural powers suffers from memory loss and is reduced to the mental ability of a child.

Thinking of something along the lines of "drug dependancy and relationships"

Would consist of (yes a double-bill):

Requiem for a Dream
The brutality of the ending with it's quick edits and music is stunning

Les Amants Du Pont Neuf
Because everyone should see this film - beautiful exploration of a homless drug addict and his friend who is slowly losing her sight and how they come to depend on one another

I`d be tempted to make it a triple bill and put on Christaine F as well , a more chilling depiction of a couples joint drift into hopelesness would be hard to find.

Shite - forgot that one! might be a tad depressing for some, but I find that and Les Amants uplifting!
