perhaps, but im thinking national lampoons vacation (the first one) with Chevy Chase

well, didn't john hughes get his first work scripting the 'vacation' movies? could be a good pre-bratpack night...

and the first 'vacation', with the 'european vacation' (with beverley d'angelo :D ) is a decent pair of undemanding, silly comedies.

Two nights:

Hollywood Headfucks: Fight Club/Donnie Darko/Adaptation/Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

And

Dark as the Pit: Requiem for a Dream/Happiness/Festen/Romance

mmmm, lovely. one'll send you insane, the other'll make you kill yourself. Who needs happy endings? :D

Yes please

How about a "Tales of Alcohol" night:

The Lost Weekend
Harvey
Cat On A Hot Tin Roof ('54 Brooks/Newman version)

Soft drinks in the bar, methinks.

Bit obvious really.. but:

Roman Polanski night:

Rosemary's Baby.
Chinatown.
Frantic.
The Ninth Gate.

Werner Herzog night:

Aguirre, Wrath of God.
Cobra Verde.
Fitzcarraldo.
The Enigma of Caspar Hauser.

sorry, i'm on a roll...
war is hell

catch 22
pork chop hill [gregory peck is ordered to take and hold a hill of no strategic importance at the end of the korean war]
all quiet on the western front
the victors [an underrated wwii flick, though it does have george peppard in it]

right that's it for now.

i promise ;)

Ah, but you've missed one of the best WWII films ever made "The Big Red One" which contains stunning acting from Mark Hamill - no, really. It's amazing and so underrated.

I'd go for "fantastic tales" from the Juenet/Caro triple of:

Delicatessen
City of Lost Children
Amelie

A week of Hanks

Hanks fun night:
Big
Batchelor Party

Hanks serious night:
Saving private ryan
Phillidelphia

Hanks/Ryan night:
You've got m@il
sleepless in seattle

Hanks '80s classic night'
The Burbs
The Moneypit

Hanks survival night
Apollo 13
Castaway

HANKS!!

Just say "no" kids - that's way too much Hanks. Big is a quality film and Moneypit is okay but after that i would have lost interest.

i think maybe a bit more explanation on some of these bills might be in order - for people who haven't seen them, or in the case of the hanks selection, to explain why in god's name you think it would be a good night

Hanks is a legend. Its about time people realised that, and i fell that if we bombarded them with a week long Hanks-a-thon they might come round.
Remember folks serious, funny, goofy or romantic. Whether infected with AIDs or on a beach a thousand miles from anywhere, Hanks delivers.
Hell, i didn't even mention Forest Gump, Green mile, Toy story.......

outbadding the bad guys

the outfit (robert duvall comes out of prison and wants revenge on the mobsters who topped his bro: cue cat and mouse hits on businesses run by the eponymous ‘outfit’ till they offer restitution)
point blank (lee marvin has been fucked over by the big boys, and he’s not happy: cue shitkicking in suits, and a granite-faced climax)

Great double!

:D

Not to be picky but the term "double bill" seems to have been streched into "themes"....

Taxi

Taxi 2

Bonkers pizza delvier guy decides to buy a Peugeot 406 and turbo-charge it to create the fastest taxi ever - might not seem it but very touching and funny films that are oh-so-french. He then becomes a driver for the police to help track down a gang of bank robbers (Taxi) and protect the Japanese PM (Taxi 2)

Also includes one of the best bumbling police officers ever on celuloid and a comedy Police Chief.... "Operation Ninja" :D
