Obviously Janis Joplin. Then there's Polly Styrene (X Ray Spex), Lora Logic (Essential Logic), Ana Da Silva (Raincoats), and Ari Up (Slits), from back in the day. Personally, unfashionable though it is, I have a lot of time for Courtenay Love. Going way back and bluesy there's the amazing Maggie Bell (Stone The Crows).

Of current singers I recommend Maria Andersson of Sahara Hotnights. Who makes it very clear that being quite monstrously rocking has nothing at all to do with macho. Get the album Jennie Bomb for a perfect distillation of pure as the driven slush garage punk from four kids from so far into the frozen north of Sweden that they played punk in 2002 like it was still 1976.

Natacha Atlas has her moments, especially on the album Diaspora. Also from the other side of the Med there's the wonderful Oum Kalthoum, Rokia Traore, and, of course, Angelique Kidjo (who rocks, but unfortunately usually backed by a German funk band).

Best of the lot is the late and too narrowly lamented Brenda Fassie. She was Africa's answer to Madonna. The answer being "fuck off honky, this is how a real woman makes dance pop that will blow your brains out and make your feat sore, and by the way, stop taking our kids."

I've always loved Sleater-Kinney, especially Dig Me Out and The Hot Rock and their last album The Woods.

A second for Veruca Salt - much underrated IMHO.

X-Ray Spex - Polly Styrene was the all-time coolest frontswoman for my money.

Made Out Of Babies. Julie Christmas is an awesome singer and frontwoman. She's also in Battle of Mice, one of RenegadeDog's favourite ever bands.
