I Hate Macs

The wifi software had some major bugs in it and there was no way to know when they'd ever get fixed. I assumed that it wasn't going to happen until the next (paid) upgrade of the OS. Thanks, Apple.

Wi-Fi software? you mean the Apple Airport driver?

This is regularly updated as a separate download to the OS.

Care to elaborate on what these "major" bugs are, I've never experienced them.

I'm sure it's all fixed now. This was a couple of years ago.

The point was - if they weren't that quick off the mark back then, what makes anyone think that they might be better now.

Microsoft do it too. They're notorious for it.

I really appreciate being able to at the very least read the bug database for a product, if not actually be able to submit a new bug. Then, follow its status as it gets worked on.

Anyway, before anyone gets too paranoid, I'm sure if you've got money to burn on flaky hardware and your other option is only going to be Windows anyway, by all means go and buy a Mac.

If nothing else, it flushes out all the losers who instantly tell you it's "cool" and drool over it.

Here's one from me.

I used to have a Powerbook G4 running Panther. It was junk.

<snip>

I can't say this matches my experience with G4 PowerBooks either.

We have 15+ of them at work spread over the various incarnations since the 400 MHz Titanium model at the beginning of 2001. I think we've had hardware issues with three of them.

- One 400 MHz has a damaged hinge after a user dropped it in August last year. Not really worth repairing a six year old machine, but I'm keeping it for parts.

- One had had a keyboard replaced after a lemonade incident that also killed the CD drive (logic board damage that wasn't economic to repair). We got an external drive.

- One has gone back for a screen repair (faulty inverter board that didn't cost much). Took about four days round trip.

The other 400 MHz PowerBook is a bit slow these days, but serviceable as pool laptop for occasional use.

My biggest gripe with PowerBooks' hardware design is the power lead connector, which seems to suffer easily when people trip over the cable. The MacBooks (of which we have one so far) have a nifty magnetic attachment that gets round this issue.

So... Becuase you got a duff Powerbook you will write off all of Apple's stuff as "flaky" and full of "bugs"...? Oh, well... You're the one missing out...!

I don't know, maybe it's just me. Maybe it's just coincidence that Google has 18,300 results for "powerbook hinges fault".

"Missing out", oh, you make me laugh.

I'm crying into my keyboard at being denied the superior computing experience you are privileged to enjoy.

Doesn't match my experiences either; my G4 is still going, and I have an appalling tendency to run machines into the ground. I almost set the Pbook on fire somehow, to the extent that it has soot around the grille at the back; I've dropped it and cracked the screen, I've put umpteen pounds of fag ash and baccy on it, the only thing I've not done is actually spill beer on it.

The pbooks are fairly precision machines and play up when they overheat, but they cool quite quickly when you're not caning them for hours with high-spec games. In fact I find Apple laptops generally run a lot cooler on average than equivalently performing PC ones I've had. (I am not sure whether the MacBooks are like that, given the different specs of the Intel chips.)

Still, as always, YMMV.

I do recall that there was an issue with Panther wifi fairly late on, though it's fine at the mo (I run my "toy" clamshell iBook on Panther as it doesn't have a DVD drive and I'm too idle to install Tiger via firewire target drive). This is actually a major issue I have with OS X, that each version seems to magically develop bugs near the end of its lifecycle. I don't actually mind paying for the new versions as you always get new and tangible improvements out of them immediately - and discover nice little tidbits as you go along as well IME - but, well, it feels a bit more than an accident, seeing as how I've seen it in both Jaguar and Panther. They get fixed but it's a bit of a coincidence. Wondering what the Tiger one will be....

My biggest gripe with PowerBooks' hardware design is the power lead connector, which seems to suffer easily when people trip over the cable.
Yes, that's a pain. The metal cylinder and the pin seem to bend very easily. Not fatally though IME.

Another thingy about Macs:

I've not used Macs for years so this is not my opinion - I JUST THOUGHT IT WAS FUN - OK??!!!

And about 52,000 each for both "ibm laptop hinges fault" and "dell laptop hinges fault"

I hesitate to insert a rolleyes smiley here.

Oh go on, you know you want to.

So, do you think Apple sell more laptops than Dell and IBM?

I've seen it before, it just left me a bit bemused to be honest. I mean, well, he might as well have gone on a rant about how Macs summon crocodiles into your bathroom and cause global warming. I don't know if it was meant to be serious or not really, or maybe he had a bad day. It's well put together mind, a decent parody of that series of Apple ads.

Problem solved with the nice new magnetic one on my macbook pro :)

And it's an unprovoked personal attack from Pie1... How nice!

Err, no. Just an observation and an opinion actually.

So are you going to give examples of my supposed "pompous anti apple rants" in this thread or not?

And what are these "double standards" you're accusing me of in this thread?

Please back up your claims because no one likes troublemaking fibbers!

Some context for stat fans (although it seems a bit of a daft exercise):
Dell US sales, Fourth Quarter 2006
Dell 4,783,000
Apple 808,000
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3457

Top 5 Vendors, Worldwide PC Shipments, Fourth Quarter 2006
2 Dell 9,666,000
(Apple didn't figure in the top 5, so no data available)
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3457
I'm sure someone could do the maths.

And for those same stats fans, Sony don't feature in the lists either but manage a stunning 47,000 results for "Sony laptop hinge fault".

Which goes to prove that Sony can do anything Apple can do, only more so ;)

Did you know "urban 75 hinge fault" gives 155,000 results. And just how many hinges DID the editor ship last year? That's a pretty high failure rate, fella. :D

There's lies, damned lies, and statistics. And sales figures. And Google results.

Anyway, back to my latte and smug interior-designed life...

I really can't be arsed TBH. Sseriously, it's a fucking computer for god's sake.

But IMO, a recent exaplme of wading in, was the iPhone thread where you got asked by more than one person, to let it lie.
Let's just say that it appears to me that you quite eagerly stick the boot in when it comes to apple, but appear - to me - to get a little snotty & defensive when someone does the same to PC's.
It's called an opinion editor - like you say to so many others - read the post properly:

I'm just observing that editor seems to be displaying what could be construed as double standards.

So please refrain from calling me a liar when I'm just expressing an opinion that rubs you up the wrong way.

Anyway, feel free to have as many last words as you like, as I've got a flight to NY to catch in a few hours and and rather a lot to still do.

Well... The usual course for these threads is that someone (usually the Editor) posts up anti-Apple articles (usually of dubious quality), the usual suspects correct it, and the same Editor takes everything very seriously indeed. And usually at some point he tells us all how pointless this all is...

Oh look. Yet another personal attack!
Why bother discussing the topic when you can keep on having a pop, eh?

Could you give me some examples of me posting up "some anti-Apple articles (usually of dubious quality)" in this thread, please?

Thanks.

Gotcha. So you just thought you'd pop in and randomly attack me with some made up stuff that was totally irrelevant to this thread?

Glad that's cleared up.

And that'll be why I described it as a " a bit of a daft exercise."
