They are incredibly cheap. Any recommendation I'd give would be based on the following combination: budget / needs & use / software & support availability

I like macs, I find them best for the type of work I do but I don't want to spend my life being the support team for all my mates or getting them to spend loads when all they want to do is surf, email, itunes and a piddly bit of typing

I'm not sure if there's any point posting about computers on a weight throwing around thread, but here goes anyway...

what no-one has mentioned so far is the limitations of the Apple hardware, and what flows from that. Should you require a computer with more slots than Apple think you should use... what? Some sort of PCI expansion chassis the only option available. Neither can the G5 crates be rackmounted properly. Users requiring such niche products are not and cannot be catered for, because the hardware capable of running MacOS cannot be second sourced.

Manufacturers designing systems around hardware platforms are necessarily nervous of a monopoly supplier that is unwilling to produce- or allow others to produce- a range of hardware.

These examples of the narrowness of the Apple vision are nothing new, exactly the same issues afflicted the early Quadra range. It became apparent back then- and is abundantly clear now- that Apple care more about their vision than they do about satisfying non-mainstream needs. While that arrogance continues the more open architecture of the PC (and, latterly, Linux) will continue to dominate.

To be fair, historically, Macs have been far from open, in both the software *and* hardware departments. Remember those mercedes-benz-logo style screwheads?! What's that about -- needing a special Mac screwdriver just to open the case ffs.

a Torx screwdriver? available in most hardware stores.

I run OS X & windoze on my brand new £400 Mac computer. I use OS X 99% of the time, which has been my prefered OS for over 12 years (inc OS9).

I could not run OSX on a peecee.

Now that is silly but, there again, I've had some PC cases that have taken an eternity to open up because they've been held together with about 10 fiddly - and quickly lost - screws.

Sony were also keen on using esoteric shaped screws for their PDAs which was a ruddy pain too: what's wrong with a standard Phillips one? Why make customers shell out for weird ones?

Thankfully, most decent desktops come with easy-peasy access nowadays.

It's not too difficult with 10.4.8 providing you've built a machine that meets the requirements of the hardware compatability list - certainly not everyone's cup of tea though.
