I Hate Macs

Vista looks like the bastard child of Windows XP and the OS on my mate's shiny new iMac.

Am I oversimplifying or is there a little bit of 'borrowing of ideas' going on here?

Well, absolutely.
Graphically? OSX looks better than XP
In your opinion, of course.

But it can't run the tools I want it to, so it's no good for me. Ergo, for me, XP is better.

I think the split with DOS and the mainstreaming of NT was more than just a service pack.

It was meant as a joke...

In reference to service releases of Windows 95....not service packs.

Look, I don't care what anyone says, the C64 pwns the Spectrum's ass every time!!

End of.

well you keep quoting people who are saying OSX looks better graphically than XP and saying 'in your opinion' so it would imply that you feel differently wouldn't it.

I've no interest in farting about with dual OS machines thanks.
On a slightly related note, Microsoft's preferred way for web developers to test sites using IE 6 and IE 7 is to run IE6 in a Virtual Machine. Similar thing can be done with Vmware Server (free for Windows, Linux), VMware Fusion (beta - Mac), or Parallels (paid-for - Windows or Mac).

But I'd guess most developers have existing ways of testing sites with different browsers.

You can use things like Parallels or CrossOver Office for Mac to run Xp side-by-side with Mac stuff... (oops just noticed that was a link to Parallels... Mr Editor... Try reading links before dismissing them...!)

I don't think I've seen the advert, but the sheer shininess of Vista truly is something to behold!

Good thing it's shiny because otherwise no-one would bother with it... Btw, Mr Ed, I have you checked that all your "tools" run on on Vista...? And that your hardware is compatible...? :D

The best feature of Vista is the installer IMO, took a fraction of the time XP did to install.

aren't you going to have to reinstall XP if you need to reinstall vista though without doing some wonderfully complicated shizzle? or have I heard wrong? something to do with serial numbers?

If you've got the standalone version and not the upgrade then you can reinstall without going anywhere near XP.

Er, perhaps you should read what I wrote.

I did read the link and like I just said, I've no interest in farting about with running two OSs on a Mac or any other platform, thanks.

Why would he want to shell out for an expensive Mac and an emulator so he can run pc software?.

Yeah, I fucking hate upgrading windows machines...it's always better to just wipe the partition and start over again with a fresh install.

Shut it with the pointless and disruptive personal abuse, please. Thanks.

S'true y'know.

I only need a few Windows apps (well, mostly one) and Parallels will bring XP out of suspended mode in a few seconds when I need it. It really is a BIG step beyond the old dual-boot world; you can share files, cut and paste and even drag and drop files between the OSes. I can also recommend Vmware Server on a PC. It's free and lets you fiddle with OSes (if that's your thing) without touching the original OS, or if you want to check that a website works in Konqueror on Linux, you can have an installation of a suitable Linux sitting around and fire it up when you need it. Or you want to try your hang at running an apache webserver on FreeBSD, you can have that too. No fiddling with boot managers, when you don't need the machine it takes no CPU or memory, only disk space, just load if when you need it.

But jæd knows that already, so I'm doing the "preaching to the converted" thing, sorry.

$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

... or your GUI equivalent. :D

he [the mac user] would be repeatedly congratulating himself for looking so cool, and banging on about how he was going to use his new laptop to write a novel, without ever getting round to doing it, like a mediocre idiot.

It's me!

Macs are cooler and better though. Duh!
